My preferred style of teaching is student-lead. I believe in the Socratic method, but appreciate following a curriculum, as well. I volunteer at a Montessori school and I know that getting learners of all ages interested and excited about a topic is the key to retention. For the past two years, I have been teaching journal-writing and college classes at the Louisville Comprehensive Care MS Center. Prior to that, I have tutored students ages 7-40 in a various set of topics, primarily math and business subjects.

Simply put my teaching style has always been to make the student comfortable with statistics. I find many students are petrified of the thought of having to understand what all those Greek symbols mean. The way I teach is to bring statistics into the student’s world. I do this by showing how statistics are used in the real world. The end result of my classes has always been that the students leaving the class have an understanding of what statistics can do for them. They may not all go on to be PhDs in the field but each one of the will take a closer look at the data that crosses their work station each day. I enjoy the German language very much and love explaining how it works to students. Though students learn in different ways, practicing both written and conversational German is imperative to be successful in mastering the language. As a student of German at Bellarmine University, I was able to learn the German language through immersion experiences in Austria and Germany. I also studied German grammar and literature in depth through classes at Bellarmine. I was a tutor in the Academic Resource Center for two years as I was completing my degree and continued to work with students for a year after my graduation.

I have a very diverse background range from English to science. My jobs require me to understand complex topics so that I can convert them into concepts that are understandable by lay audiences. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Humanities. I am finishing my Master of Science in Entomology at the University of Nebraska. My unconventional background is what fuels my desire to learn about science. I have a solid understanding of grammar as evident by the more than 300 trade letters, papers, and articles I have authored in my career.
