My comments on tutoring Chess : Ive been playing chess since I was a kid.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.
I am a Mechanical Engineering and Geology dual major with a 3.6 GPA. I understand mathematics very well and have tutored fellow students in math and physics, successfully for years. My method of teaching varies with the subject. A spanish tutor and a chemistry tutor can go about things quite differently. I like leading students to find answers on their own so that they understand the paths they are taking. That method is especially helpful in hard sciences and math. In the liberal arts (poli-sci, literature, religion, philosophy, etc.) I like to work in the Socratic method. I'll challenge the students on topics and concepts with questions that need some thought. Earning a degree in Communications accelerated my skills in writing through Journalism, research papers and Rhetorical studies.
