My comments on tutoring Chess : Ive been playing chess since I was a kid.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.
I am a Mechanical Engineering and Geology dual major with a 3.6 GPA. I understand mathematics very well and have tutored fellow students in math and physics, successfully for years. My comments on tutoring Chess : I learned the game of Chess many years ago and have had experience playing many times over the years. I know the individual moves of all the pieces and the general goals and strategies to use in order to win the game.

I have worked with children and adolescents for over 30 years in various capacities and not only have a substantial amount of experience in varying types of special needs, but have very good rapport with children of all ages. In a tutoring situation there is usually the immediate need (to pass a test) and the long term need to be able to succeed on their own. I try to balance these two goals but the guidance of the parents is most critical. My method of teaching varies with the subject. A spanish tutor and a chemistry tutor can go about things quite differently. I like leading students to find answers on their own so that they understand the paths they are taking. That method is especially helpful in hard sciences and math. In the liberal arts (poli-sci, literature, religion, philosophy, etc.) I like to work in the Socratic method. I'll challenge the students on topics and concepts with questions that need some thought.
