As a special education teacher, I am required to possess patience. I feel I have a great deal of patience, as I taught students with moderate to severe disabilities. My teaching style was one in which I developed creative ways to achieve specific life goals. Age appropriate materials and activities were a must in my classroom and although a student may have been learning his/her colors, I would use functional things to teach them such as road signs, rather than the common elementary objects such as balls, counting bears, etc. I believe that all students are handicapped, some just more so than others. During my four years at East TN State University (ETSU), I tutored college students in General and Organic Chemistry, and multiple Psychology courses. I also taught for Kaplan Test Prep in small classes and prepared high school students for the SAT and ACT. I graduated in 2004 with a BS in Psychology. I then went to South College to get my teaching certificate. I student taught for 16 weeks under two wonderful mentoring teachers, and started subbing in January 2005.
