Florida Writes is one of my top subjects!

I began working with children at the age of 10 in the capacity of babysitter/activities director. As a teen I began working in daycare centers and have worked in the capacity of teacher/assistant teacher/ director/owner. I have taught public school in Florida and the Bronx, NY over the past 5 years. I have worked as a drop-out prevention teacher and have had the privileged to work with a large number of disadvantaged and at-risk students.
I have strong classroom management skills and a passion for helping kids gain a better understanding for anything under the sun! I have high expectations of what my students can do, and help support them in achieving those expectations. My philosophy is that "can't" is the worst 4 letter word in the dictionary, as a result, I work to motivate my students to become life long learners and to enjoy learning new things.

Patient, Engaging, Effective Tutor

I have tutored students in many subjects, including language arts, math, science, and reading. I have worked with students under NCLB and with FCAT (Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test program). Some of my past students had learning disabilities, such as Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, or diagnosed as "Slow Learner." Several of these students were being medicated and were repeating at least one grade. I was able to help them with their educational needs. I have an extensive academic background, possessing AA, BA, and MA degrees. I have a reputation for high personal integrity and positive results. All of my students have made significant improvements as I worked with them. In addition to tutoring, I have proctored grade school students in various subjects and adult learners in the GED as well as employment exams. I welcome the opportunity to help you or your child with their educational needs ... read more

Studying French and Russian Studies at Stetson allowed me gain more than a grasp on those two languages, but insight to the cultures, an appreciation for and ability to interpret literature and poetry, a deeper understanding of history, geography, and politics as well as a desire to share all of this with others.
I believe that children need to find a reason to have a goal of being educated. Coming from a small town and having such a global perspective, I love helping children see their place in this vast world and that they are an important global citizen. I try to show them through energetic discovery, that all this "boring stuff" leads to much more interesting and and fun stuff. Children need to know that they are important assets to us all and that they are more than capable of over acheiving whatever they set out to do.

I personally believe that all students should be treated equitably rather than equally. We as educators must realize that our students are individuals and deserve to be treated as so. We must realize certain techniques work for a few and not the entire group. It is our responsibility as educators to encourage our students to reach their potential and provide a safe learning environment in which to do so.
I recently graduated with a Masters in Teaching from the University of South Florida. I also have earned a BA in History from St. Cloud State University. I have previous experience working at a private school in tampa as a classroom assistant. I also have experience tutoring primary and secondary students in reading and math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have over a years experience volunteering in the Elem. level education, and I am presently finishing up my Bachelors Degree In elem. Education online with the University Of Phoenix. I am very patient and understanding to a child's needs in weak areas of learning. If learning is made to be creative fun and challenging I have found that they will strive to want to learn.
I love working with children, I have 3 of my own two of them are on the honor roll,Learning style is different to kids and their needs. For example you maybe able to go over material once with a child and they get it and others it takes more time or you have to ask them more questions about their interests and base the learning activity geared toward their interests, this will hold their attention and they will want to learn the material.

I am a recently retired school teacher/administrator. My career has included serving as an elementary teacher of 4th and 5th grades as well as Special educator in grades pre-school to high school aged students. For five years, I served as a principal of elementary and middle schools. I am certified to teach all subjects in these areas and am certified in NY and FL.
My teaching style could best be described as democratic and socratic. I believe all teachers need to be well prepared for the classroom and ready to shift gears when a question might demand it. I believe that teaching and learning are one in the same. Teacher and student should be ready to teach and learn together. I am patient and willing to go as quickly or as slowly as needed. Students determine the pace, and delivery of instruction is based on the needs of the students.

I believe in order to be an effective teacher you have to make learning fun and try to make it a game with every child. I like to teach hands on using various techniques. As a graduate of Florida A&M University I have always had a high regard for education. In earning a Bachelor's degree in Social Work I have gained a deeper understanding of the needs of people. In addition, I have been able to enhance my grammatical and reading skills with each research paper I've written. During the last eleven years I have worked with at-risk youth helping them to develop their social and professional development skills. I'm also a mentor.
I love working with the youth and have done so for the last eleven years. While working with at-risk youth I've always had the belief that every child has the ability to learn, just in different ways. I believe in the three learning styles; Visual (sight), Auditory (hearing), and Kinesthetic (moving.) Once you can pin-point a child's learning style, the sky is the limit to what they can achieve. I've always done my bes ... read more

During the completion of my Bachelor's degree in Psychology I had the opportunity to work with the Maricopa College District, as well as the No Child Left Behind Program. While working with the Maricopa College District I assisted students that were enrolled in the ACE Adult Program. These students ranged in ages from 18 to 65 years old. Additionally, I worked with Martin Porres Educational Services and the No Child Left Behind Program. During my years of tutoring I have assisted students in Psychology, Statistics, math courses up to Calculus, basic science classes, reading, English, computer courses, and nursing courses (relating to mathematics).
Not only do I love to teach and help students learn, I also enjoy helping students develop an appreciation for learning in general. The most gratifying experience while teaching is the look on a student's face, after hours of confusion, a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As an aspiring writer, I hold a strong love for words in all forms. I enjoy writing them, reading them, speaking them, and sharing my love for them with others. My love for words helped me to earn a BA in Communication Studies while minoring in Journalism. In addition to utilizing these skills through extra-cirricular coursework and freelance writing opportunities, I have always enjoyed teaching others how to communicate through private tutoring. During the past 5 years, I have tutored students in phonics, reading and essay writing.
I believe that the best way to teach is by learning alongside the student. Through my previous tutoring experience, I have found that the most successful sessions are a result of first understanding the student's learning style. Once an understanding of the learning style is established, the tutoring sessions are catered to fit each student's personal n ... read more

It seems I have always been involved in education, whether through planning/implementing lesson plans, creating assessments or one-on-one work with a student. I have experience in all areas of education with all ranges of students and have learned from each one of them. All lesson plans and standards are adaptable no matter the need. I have created unique units (such as "Language of the Week") and worked with birth through age 22.
Everyone has always told me that I was born to be a teacher, that I have an innate gift to decipher what a student needs and to promote success and accomplish goals. I am patient, considerate and flexible. Learning occurs through teachable moments every day, and it is how we respond to these moments that determines our future. Student needs and learning styles vary and educational structure should be adapted to the individual needs of the student. I ... read more

I love working and teaching with so many different students. All children have the opportunity to learn and sometimes it takes that extra effort put forth not only by the student but also a willing individual to help them. I believe that by giving students that extra learning opportunities, they are able to grasp the information or skills in another environment rather then the classroom.
As a graduate from the University of Florida's Proteach program, I've been given the opportunity to be a part of many different learning and instructional environments. I have worked with some of the lowest achieving students as well as some high achieving students. I have worked with students of all grade levels from Kindergarten to middle school. I value the time and learning experience of each student as well as their parent.
