Patient, Engaging, Effective Tutor

I have tutored students in many subjects, including language arts, math, science, and reading. I have worked with students under NCLB and with FCAT (Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test program). Some of my past students had learning disabilities, such as Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, or diagnosed as "Slow Learner." Several of these students were being medicated and were repeating at least one grade. I was able to help them with their educational needs. I have an extensive academic background, possessing AA, BA, and MA degrees. I have a reputation for high personal integrity and positive results. All of my students have made significant improvements as I worked with them. In addition to tutoring, I have proctored grade school students in various subjects and adult learners in the GED as well as employment exams. Florida Writes is one of my top subjects!

I have strong classroom management skills and a passion for helping kids gain a better understanding for anything under the sun! I have high expectations of what my students can do, and help support them in achieving those expectations. My philosophy is that "can't" is the worst 4 letter word in the dictionary, as a result, I work to motivate my students to become life long learners and to enjoy learning new things.
I began working with children at the age of 10 in the capacity of babysitter/activities director. As a teen I began working in daycare centers and have worked in the capacity of teacher/assistant teacher/ director/owner. I have taught public school in Florida and the Bronx, NY over the past 5 years. I have worked as a drop-out prevention teacher and have had the privileged to work with a large number of disadvantaged and at-risk students.

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : I have some experience with teaching writing skills at the middle school level and as part of the GED.

My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.
I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents. I believe that these experiences qualify me to tutor social studies, reading, and math.

I believe that each child's talents and abilities need to be nurtured through creative and constructive curriculum and delivery, including acknowledging the importance of integrating playtime with instruction. I have worked in many educational environments - public and private schools; juvenile detention facilities and home school cooperatives - each place offering it's own rules and protocol for developing and nurturing a child. One approach that I used in ALL these facilities yielded the best results for both child and educator (me!) and that was simply to follow this rule: provide trust and mutual respect, and give enough room for students to learn to make real, responsible choices in pursuing their true interests.

I have earned my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I taught 2nd grade for three years in Hernando County, and now I am currently teaching 1st grade at a magnet school in Tampa. I was a homebound teacher for two years, tutored several different students one on one, and did the after school tutoring program for title one students as well. Most of my teaching experience is in the primary grades. I have attended several different trainings on reading, writing, and math.
I love teaching and working with all different types of children. I believe every child has a different way to learn. I then held a position with the Pasco County School Board as a Site Manager for thier before and after school program. The program's philosophy was based on learning centers and enrichment activities that would further the childrens knowledge and enstill a love for learning. I worked for PLACE for 16yrs. and had a very large center with over 150 children. I then decided that I wanted to teach in a classroom setting and in 2006 I went and took the subject area test for pre K-3. I then applied and was hired on as a kindergarten teacher at Fox Hollow. I entered the Alternative Certification Program that was offered by the Pasco County Schools and completed my certification in 2007.
I think that my teaching style changes as as the school year progresses. I observe and evaluate the different ways that my children are able to learn, and I implement those specific practices. I beli ... read more

After volunteer tutoring at my daughters’ schools, I was determined to study teaching to have a better understanding of children with special learning needs. As a private college student, I was very motivated to obtain superior grades and I maintained an average G.P.A. of 3.50+ while caring for my children and home. As I began teaching I was involved in extensive professional development courses through each school district I worked. While working with many different teachers I aquired extensive amounts of content knowledge and teaching strategies in elementary education, biology, English, American government, world cultures and economics.
As evidenced by my experiences, I enjoy teaching students on many different ability and grade levels. My students found me to be laid back and understanding with high expectations. I believe each student has a unique gift to offer but it take ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I discovered my love of teaching when I started volunteering as a reading tutor and youth group leader. I am most effective when I work with students in a one-on-one or small group setting, which allows me to focus on individual students’ strengths and challenges. I customize my approach with each student’s particular learning style in mind. My goal is that students understand and learn to think critically and independently, not simply memorize. When I see a child’s eyes light up with understanding and smile at accomplishment, I know I have succeeded in making a difference.
While completing my B.A. in Management at Eckerd, I learned how to write effectively and enhanced my understanding of grammar, mathematics, history, social studies and economics. As a volunteer tutor at a public school and at my church, I began to develop my teaching skills. These rewarding experiences mot ... read more

I have over a years experience volunteering in the Elem. level education, and I am presently finishing up my Bachelors Degree In elem. Education online with the University Of Phoenix. I am very patient and understanding to a child's needs in weak areas of learning. If learning is made to be creative fun and challenging I have found that they will strive to want to learn.
I love working with children, I have 3 of my own two of them are on the honor roll,Learning style is different to kids and their needs. For example you maybe able to go over material once with a child and they get it and others it takes more time or you have to ask them more questions about their interests and base the learning activity geared toward their interests, this will hold their attention and they will want to learn the material.

Here is Some Good Information About Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive). Florida Writes can be challenging. Make a difference with a tutor today.
