My Chinese language learning started in high school, continuing for 3 years. I attended Northeastern University for one year, continuing studying Chinese, while majoring in Linguistics. After a year hiatus, I joined the Navy and attended the Defense Language Institute achieving a 4.0 GPA in Mandarin Chinese. I have since continued my studies and am currently awaiting the next HSK exam date in fall 2013. I tutored middle school students in Chinese during high school and was a peer tutor at DLI. I have taught swim lessons for many years now and absolutely love working with children of all ages. I prefer one on one lessons to achieve the best experience for both student and tutor.

I like to break down whatever skill I'm teaching in the simplest form at first. This means explaining the concept of the skill in a way that the student can understand what it is we are trying to do. I also try to use a pictorial representation of the skill if that is needed. After that I'll show them how I work a problem with that particular skill so they can see firsthand what the thought process is and the steps that are needed to use that particular skill whether it is adding fractions or solving equations, etc. Then I'll give the student a problem to do on their own while I guide them through the steps. If they get off on a particular step I'll correct them immediately and get them on the right path. Once I feel they understand what is going on and how to work a problem, I'll give them a problem to do without me watching them and see if they can get the answer right by themselves. T

I studied Mandarin Chinese beginning in high school, going on through college, and most recently attended the Defense Language Institute where I maintained a 4.0 GPA in their intensive Mandarin course. I change my teaching style depending on the client. With ESL students, I will often point out every mistake to them so that they can get used to seeing what the correct way looks like. With other students, I point out a few mistakes, and then expect them to find the others on their own. With math, I will give out a sample problem, work out how it is done, then expect the student to do a new math problem on his or her own.
