Many of the things in life that we don't "get" are things we don't understand. When teaching, I try to break things down and simplify them so they can be easily understood. Often the kids in my class are those who do not like to be challenged, so I incorporate a lot of questions to provoke thinking and problem solving on their own. Since repetition is a key component to learning, I review a lot which requires patience but pays great dividends in the long run. I try to keep things fresh and fun by adding a lot of variety, and also like to motivate with real-world examples so students can see a practicle use for what they are learning.

I've always enjoyed the opportunity to explain things I'm familiar with to people who need it explained. My teaching style is very simple, but is one that took a long time to learn. In college you are taught everything but HOW to teach. I learned the HOW by watching my teachers and having some very good mentors. I began to ask myself, " why do I learn more from this instructor than that instructor?" No matter what the subject is, you have to learn 2 things to reach the student. One, how does this student learn. Two, you can't force the information. I feel that a student learns more and shows more excitement when they are allowed to find answers on their own. This also takes building a relationship with the student.

As a student attending Florida State University's Civil Engineering program I was required to regularly learn, understand and apply complex mathematical equations, and scientific concepts to both hypothetical and real world problems. My college experience in the subjects of Economics, Government, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies was rigorous. After finishing undergraduate courses, I worked for a program that sent college students out to public schools to be Teacher's Aids. We were expected to help any students who were falling behind in a subject. The experience was so rewarding that after graduation, I took a position working with troubled students convicted of sexual assault, teaching them math and science for six months.
