I am in my second year as a certified/licensed sign language interpreter. I currently interperet at West Aurora High school. I basically teach according to what the students like or is familiar with (art, sport, etc.) and I utilize what they're good at with the subject matter. For instance, if a student is into baseball, I teach math using scoring method, countries where players are from for social studies, speed of running, throwing, etc. for teaching science, and so on. With the younger students, I oberve them during choice time or free play and document what areas they are attracted to the most, how they interact with each other and their conversations. I use the data to help me develop and strenghten the abilities they exhibit.

Sign Language is one of my top subjects! Certification in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies

I was previously a dance instructor, and understand the basic principles of advancing within a certain skill. I have the patience and determination to yield results from a young educator. I currently hold a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Speech and Language Pathology. Through my undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa, I have learned about many speech disorders and the processes and basic understandings of changing behavior. Within speech and hearing I found a passion for American Sign Language. I became certified in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at the university of Iowa and would like to pursue a career involving Sign Language.

I believe a great teacher needs to have proper skills and talents for teaching. I learned a lot while growing up from a great teacher; my mother. My mother was a teacher for thirty years teaching elementary grades. I learned a great teacher needs to be respectful, patient and to be able to illustrate the lesson in an easy, simple way. I try to provide simple analogies for each concept. This enables the student to grasp the concept easier and faster. In addition I help my students to learn better by asking few questions about the concept. This will help them to truly understand the lesson by using their analytical thinking.

I have wanted to be a teacher all my life. I love working with children and teaching. I believe that children are the future and should be given the opportunity to do well and succeed in school. I like to do my best to teach students how to do something and then let them discover and practice how to do it for themselves on their own. I feel that providing good instruction and then being there to assist when needed is the best way for students to learn. I also understand that all students learn differently, so I would include the student in determining what strategies work best for him or her.
