I try to present a concept or fact in several different ways so that I can resonate with the students thinking style. I have been told that I am a very good communicator and educator and can make concepts that seem complicated look much simpler and more comprehendible. During my time at the University of Missouri-Columbia, I earned two degrees: a BA in Philosophy and a BA in Theater. I also took many writing classes, focusing on different types of creative writing, from fiction to poetry to playwrighting. When I graduated in 2002, I spent several years in Barcelona, Spain working with college students. During that time, I tutored students in both English and Spanish, and several times taught introductory Spanish courses to students involved in summer exchange programs. I really enjoy ideas. I believe that effective teaching should stimulate critical thinking skills. I like to use the Socratic method of teaching by asking students questions. In my classes I frequently ask students .."what do you think?" as a means for them to share their ideas with other students and stimulate new ideas. Education should be more than rote memorization, but rather a gaining an understanding of concepts and being able to apply those concepts in a real world context. In addition to my formal education, I have extensive experience in government relations and health care policy, this broad experience has allowed me to effectively teach a variety of subjects at an undergraduate level. I have taught classes in public administration, public policy and grant writing but also have taught both micro and macro economics, American government and basic web design.
