I have been teaching for the last fifteen years. I started my teaching career in the junior high grades and then decided that my preference would be with the younger children. I have taught both second and third grade and throughly loved both levels. I have attended various classes and workshops relating to helping children learn to read and love doing it. I have taken the South Dakota Reading Curriculum both at the second and third grade levels. I have tutored children and for four years ran the summer reading program for the Beresford area children.
I have become very familiar with the differentiated instruction model of teaching students. I have taught classes in public administration, public policy and grant writing but also have taught both micro and macro economics, American government and basic web design.
I believe that effective teaching should stimulate critical thinking skills. I like to use the Socratic method of teaching by asking students questions. In my classes I frequently ask students .."what do you think?" as a means for them to share their ideas with other students and stimulate new ideas. I try to present a concept or fact in several different ways so that I can resonate with the students thinking style. I have been told that I am a very good communicator and educator and can make concepts that seem complicated look much simpler and more comprehendible. If you've ever looked at the Khan Academy website, were Sal Khan makes little You Tube videos on all sorts of math and science topics, you will see a very similar method to how I educate .
