A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for the last fifteen years. I started my teaching career in the junior high grades and then decided that my preference would be with the younger children. I have taught both second and third grade and throughly loved both levels. I have attended various classes and workshops relating to helping children learn to read and love doing it. I have taken the South Dakota Reading Curriculum both at the second and third grade levels. I have tutored children and for four years ran the summer reading program for the Beresford area children.
I have become very familiar with the differentiated instruction model of teaching students. Each child has an individual way of learning and it is up to the teacher to discover that way and lead or drive instruction with that in mind. A Little Bit About Me...

In addition to my formal education, I have extensive experience in government relations and health care policy, this broad experience has allowed me to effectively teach a variety of subjects at an undergraduate level. I have taught classes in public administration, public policy and grant writing but also have taught both micro and macro economics, American government and basic web design.
I believe that effective teaching should stimulate critical thinking skills. I like to use the Socratic method of teaching by asking students questions. In my classes I frequently ask students .."what do you think?" as a means for them to share their ideas with other students and stimulate new ideas. Education should be more than rote memorization, but rather a gaining an understanding of concepts and being able to apply those concepts in a real world context.

I use my work experience to apply what the student has learned in the classroom and instruct them how the subject is applied in today's work force. I try to present a concept or fact in several different ways so that I can resonate with the students thinking style. I have been told that I am a very good communicator and educator and can make concepts that seem complicated look much simpler and more comprehendible. If you've ever looked at the Khan Academy website, were Sal Khan makes little You Tube videos on all sorts of math and science topics, you will see a very similar method to how I educate .

When I was in school, I could always understand or figure out what the teacher was trying to get across. Some students, however, didn’t always understand what was being explained. I was the kid who would rephrase the teacher’s remarks and explain it again in a way that the other students could understand. Not all students understand things in the same way. I try to find a way to explain things so the material is more interesting and less frustrating than it is when the teacher explains it. I love the “ah-hah moments” when you realize the student just got it. I am easy going; and kids have an easy time talking with me.
