I earned my Engineering Degree in 1998 and have worked my entire career in that field. I have 20 years experience as an educator and 2 years as a private tutor. I currently teach English in an adult education setting and have successfully tutored students in Reading, Writing, Grammar, Math, Study Skills, SAT/ACT prep and GED preparation. I believe that students truly understand ideas and processes when they discover them independently; rote memorization does not instill thinking skills. To be a well-rounded academic, students must learn to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to work through problems and issues based on broad concepts and rules. Pupils must learn and memorize certain rules and concepts as a matter of course, but it is the ability to take these ideas and apply them to many topics, often with help and guidance, that makes a true critical thinker. I strive to intercede and guide students when necessary to push them through the barriers to fully realizing how concepts apply to different problems and situations. I have educated both college and middle school students, and through these experiences I learned that the key to effectively teaching others is patience. I guide my students but do not do the work for them. Most students have the ability to learn the material being instructed to them. By being patient, I give the students the opportunity to problem solve on their own, which ultimately builds confidence. With more confidence, students seem to learn better. I believe this is the key to mastering any academic subject. I recently graduated college with a BA in Human Biology, and I am currently in the transition between undergraduate school and medical school.
