A Little Bit About Me...

I have been an educator in the field of education for the past 21 years. Three of those years were spent in upper elementary in the area of Language Arts. Nine of those years were spent in a first grade classroom were reading with a phonics approach ws used in cross curricular subjects daily. The remainder of the years of service has been spent as an elementary principal or a superintendent.
I am a firm believer that all children can learn and that each child has a individual method in which the can and will learn subject matter. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching and working with children of all ages. I feel any person regardless of age can learn. Each learns to their own preferred learning style. First, an analysis of student skills must be taken to ensure foundational skills are sufficient. Next, students need an explanation of new material; I prefer a hands-on approach. This needs to be given in such a way that builds on previous knowledge with minimal confusion. Lastly, I feel students need practice with instant feedback, repetition and continuous review of weak skills.

Upon graduation from college, I taught 7th grade English for two years, then Gifted & Talented grades 4-6. I left the field of teaching for marriage and babies. My husband was in the military, so we moved quite often. I homeschooled our two children for most of their elementary years. After that I taught 7th grade Algebra at a private school. I have tutored adults and children off and on over the years in various subjects, from reading to anatomy and math.
I believe the most important skill we can impart to children is a love for learning, and a curiosity about life. That, with a firm foundation in reading and math, will take them anywhere they want to go. I do utilize more of a socratic rather than a didactic approach, and endeavor to involve the learner in discovery as much as possible. I believe that everyone can learn if given the proper encouragement.
