I make sure that the student understands my explanations of topics, and if they do not, I make sure to rephrase coherently so that they do. I actively engage the student in their learning, encouraging them to answer their own questions rather than simply lecturing. When I am teaching I am very patient and try to organize the lesson or my assistance in steps. I'll have the child read the problem or question, ask what they know about it, see if they understand the question and proceed. The patient style helps me see what the student's strengths and weaknesses are so I know what they need to practice and focus on. If the child has multiple assignments or tasks I have them perform the more difficult ones first. Starting with the easy assignments may seem like it makes sense but I would prefer that the student have more energy for the tasks they'll have more difficulty with.
