My comments on tutoring Study Skills : I have constantly balanced being an excellent student with being an athlete. In my senior year of high school I took 6 AP classes while playing varsity volleyball and playing for a volleyball club requiring 20 hrs/week. In college I was a psychology major, taking pre-med courses, and playing/working for the women's D1 volleyball team 30 hrs/week. I also successfully spent the last summer studying for and taking the MCAT. These experiences have necessitated that I develop excellent study skills in order to accomplish all of my academic goals.

I have succeeded as a Pre-Med student and psychology major while playing for the University of Colorado D1 women’s volleyball team and thus developed excellent study skills. I have taken and done well on the MCAT and I am applying to medical school in the summer of 2013. I have spent time tutoring my younger brother and many of my teammates and friends in biology, general chemistry, writing/editing, and all psychology fields.

I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck.
