Teaching organic chemistry has been a passion of mine for many years. I’m a full time independent chemistry tutor, both worldwide via Skype and locally in Western Massachusetts. I have an M.S. in computational organic chemistry. Organic chemistry is unique in the way that first principles build on each other throughout the course. I am an expert at breaking chemistry down into fundamental concepts so that students I work with can spend less time memorizing, and more time understanding. I believe the best way for someone to learn something is through application and repetition. As both a tutor and youth lacrosse coach I have had success by teaching my students how to approach problems rather than simply giving them answers. I am extremely patient and am very willing to take alternative approaches in helping a student learn.
During my undergraduate career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I obtained a wealth of knowledge in the fields of math and science. I did this by striving for excellence in the classroom and participating in cutting edge research with professors in the Entomology and Organic Chemistry departments. My journey through the undergraduate sciences has given me the skills needed to be an effective tutor. Holding a 3.6 GPA, I was able to work with students in group settings, teaching as well as learning. As a member of the chemistry society, we also offered peer tutoring where I was an active participant. My bachelors degree consists of a minor in chemistry while majoring in exercise science. In addition, I have completed additional science coursework in preparation for my fall 2009 MCAT testing. Inorganic Chemistry was my favorite class of my academic career. I had fantastic teachers and decided when I had the opportunity to give back to academia, I would teach inorganic chemistry. After I finished my Ph.D I became an adjunct professor at a local community college. I have been teaching chemistry for five years.
The most important aspect of my teaching style is my ability to relax my students. I believe if you are in a relaxed environment, learning becomes easy.
