I have been tutoring for many years with different kinds of children. To begin with, I tutored my younger sister starting when she was about seven years old to age twelve or thirteen. In high school, I also volunteered for an after-school program for Hispanic children ages seven-twelve where I helped them with their homework in various subjects. In addition, I spent about four months tutoring a severely autistic child, teaching him different communication skills and helping him to form patterns. I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively. I usually achieve this by showing them how to do a problem, doing a problem or two with them, and then having them do problems on their own, only assisting when they need it. I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas. I also see how to apply what I have learned to original problems because I see connections and hold a deeper understanding of the material. I love teaching -- standing in front of a class of students, feeling the pressure of their attention and responsibility for their education -- but I think I enjoy tutoring more. Even when I was teaching a class of twenty-five college freshmen, I tried to move things in that direction, giving my students incentives to come by during my office hours (hard to do with such busy students).
