I have a conversational teaching style. I emphasize the thought process that facilitates problem solving and conceptual understanding that lies behind all math and science subjects.
I worked for Panther Academic Support Services at UW Milwaukee from Sept 2007 to May 2011. I tutored students individually and in group settings in math and science courses. I have worked with students from all academic backgrounds. I began tutoring algebra to incoming freshmen. I tutored calculus to business students and I tutored physics to students studying health science. I have found that it takes multiple ways of presenting a topic for students to have a expert grasp of the subject.

I have a PhD in Zoology from The Ohio State University and over the past 25 years I have taught at Columbus Technical Institute and Portland State University. I have taught courses in General Biology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Ecology and a graduate course in Limnology. At Portland State I was also involved in a research program to improve student outcomes. This project attempted to improve student's experiences in a cost effective manner, establish an infrastructure that helps implement technology, and evaluate the effectiveness of educational technology on student learning.
I enjoy teaching. There is something about the educational process, transfer of knowledge to students, that I have always found satisfying. It has been my experience that learning is an active process rather than a passive one. Thus I have seldom “taught” students anything. Rather I have enabl ... read more

I first like to establish the circumstances or situation of the problem to simply verify and make clear what is happening. This is important for any problem, whether math or an essay question. Next, my goal is to make clear the basic concept of the theory or formula that needs to be applied to the problem. This is probably the most crucial step in that it is very important to make a connection between reality and being able to measure or quantify the problem and that it makes sense. Next, it is important to simplistically breakdown the problem as much as possible to clearly apply the theory and calculations to the problem. Finally, go through the fundamentals of solving the problem and go over any “shortcuts” that may ease the calculations.

A Little Bit About Me...

A major drawback in current teaching methods at schools and institutions is the absence of efforts to educate students, why they should learn things they are being taught. I try to understand the students need level of interest and proficiency prior to designing multimedia and multi methodology course or delivery methods filled with real world application and references to fill the students need. My classes and presentations are interactive, fact filled and simplistic in nature with stress on reasoning rather than accumulation of facts and information. I am looking to utilize my creative teaching methods, vast experience and innovative techniques to change a student’s perspective about what they are learning and why they have to learn.

As a biochemistry undergraduate student, I was selected to be an organic chemistry workshop leader. As a workshop leader, I meet with students on a weekly basis to complete difficult organic chemistry problems and answer any questions that they may have. In addition to the workshops, I was also asked to be a teaching assistant. As a teaching assistant, I work closely with professors to establish grading guidelines, and use my knowledge of organic chemistry to grade for a course of over 200 students.
I am very flexible in my teaching style, and delivery of information. Some students know exactly how they learn, while others are unsure. I will always adapt to an individuals learning style. Although it is sometimes difficult to determine how a student learns best, it is important to recognize these differences among individuals. It is my goal to make sure that each student leaves a tu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it. This is the best use of my time with a student, instead of just correcting their exercises. It also requires the confidence of the student to know that they can fully grasp a concept first, and then put it into practice, so I like to encourage that personal confidence.
Throughout my education, I've found that broad academic interests have led me to pursue a wide range of subjects simultaneously. My undergraduate degree is a double ma ... read more

In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. This is why tutoring is so important, in my opinion. This is the core of the approach I take to tutoring my peers, presenting ideas to professors, and to teaching younger students.
I received my Bachelors of Arts degree from Willamette University, where I majored in politics and minored in economics. I chose to work for a Bachelor's of Arts degree because it stresses a strong understanding of all subjects - this is the core of my approach to learning and education. Educationally, I have a BA in Mathematics from Vassar College, a school where I achieved a high level of success graduating with high honors both generally and within my major. While this gives me the mastery necessary to approach all levels of math up to the graduate level, my teaching experience makes it possible for me to convey those subjects to my students. I began working one on one with students while teaching guitar in high school and since then have continued to facilitate students' learning at various levels. Most recently I've pursued experiential education working with kids on farms, backpacking trips, and canoe expeditions. I apply this hands on approach to education in the classroom as well, one that I found successful while teaching Linear Algebra to college freshmen my senior year.

I enjoy tutoring, especially with motivated people. I have much experience in translating difficult academic problems to meaningful skills. I still don't have my times tables memorized but can demonstrate difficult fractions and imaginary numbers to others. My experience in laboratory, design and classroom settings allows me to illustrate complex concepts meaningfully. I enjoy working one-on-one to help facilitate deeper understanding. I would consider working with special needs children or those with learning disabilities.
I have had experience in tutoring mathematics at local community colleges. I have also tutored chemistry, physics and many medical subjects informally. I have finished classwork in a medical program and have assisted with many classes, mostly in physiology related courses.

I have an extensive experience in the field of tutoring. For the past eight years, I have work with students from age kindergarten to highschool. From one-on-one tutoring, small groups, to helping a class of more than 60 students. Therefore, I can recognize each student's ability and devised a studying plan to help them improve their weaknesses. With a Bachelor degree in Biology and Chemistry, I have a strong background in science and mathematics. Furthermore, I have taken many courses in Writing, English, and grammar.
Each student has different ways to learn. Some students require a more visual approach while ohers prefer repetion through listening and writing. I try to find the best way to help students learn and retain information. I believe that with the right help, every student has the potential to achieve academic success.

My teaching style is simple. In my classroom, I am the teacher, the gate keeper and the executioner. This is premised by my belief in the contingency theory, tempered in some ways that an open, honest and frank discussion in the class is a vital and productive way to educate.
I am professional, and would love to apply my ideas in innovation regarding the education environment, duration and implementation. My bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, while accomplished a while back, is a plus in that I’ve learned to apply my analytical skills in the years gone by. I am presently an AVID tutor, and this is another badge of my working skill that I am proud to mention. I had dealt with students which were not emotionally or physically set-up for the classroom that needed to be addressed on a daily basis. I have taught math and algebra in a college setting. A Little Bit About Me...

Graduating from three different institutions, I have earned two master and a bachelor degrees – MS in Biology and MA in Special Education, and BA in Biology. Math and Science have my main strengths in earning the degrees. Being deaf since birth, I have learned a lot about deaf people – especially children with their delayed language and math skills. I want to give something back of what I have excelled in education. Many people and children deserve the education and help they need in order to make progress in math.
Teaching for 11 years in deaf education, I have enjoyed seeing a growth in my students’ math academic progress in middle school and high school level. Most children who are deaf have a delay in language learning. A deaf child who uses sign language, English is not their first language. Math, reading, and writing are the three academic subjects that require special goal ... read more
