My comments on tutoring ACT: I took prep classes for this test, but did the majority of studying alone. I took the test twice. The first I went in almost cold and got a 31, the second time with more studying I got a 34. 34 on Writing, 35 on Math, 36 on Reading, 32 on Science and a 9 on the Essay. From all of my preparation I know how to break down the test and explain the thinking behind scoring well.

Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts. I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.

Throughout my life, I have always had an ability to talk with and to listen to adolescents. Regardless of a student’s academic aptitude, socio-economic status, or learning differences, I honestly believe that each student has the ability and the right to learn about the world around them and to be helped by adults in their life-path and individual growth. As a teacher planning lessons, I deliberately infuse the learning with opportunities for student choice, intellectual growth, and explorations into interconnected themes, ideas, and questions. I know that all students can be highly successful, if provided the opportunity to interact with engaged and thoughtful teachers. As a person who truly values learning, I have continuously engaged in being both a student and a teacher in academically rigorous studies. With over 14 years of professional education experience, including high scho

I am a strong believer in Multiple Intelligences. I know that first I must learn who my students are and how they learn if I am to teach them successfully. I employ the Socratic method often possible, and keep lessons as student-centered as possible. I frequently make use of the students' interests and technology to engage them. Students thrive when they see the usefulness of what they are learning, and when techniques are adapted to their needs. As a professional educator, I am dedicated to seeing all students succeed. I have earned two bachelor degrees, a BA in History and a BA in English, as well as New York State certification and my MAT Social Studies. I have tutored throughout my academic career, and continue to teach and tutor in a wide variety of subjects.

During my 30 years of teaching, I have developed many activities, demonstrations, discussions, and inquiry learning techniques to help students understand the concepts of science. For the past seven years, I have been tutoring after school. My teaching is visual and hands-on, with demonstrations, diagrams and examples from every-day life. I seek to discuss information with my students rather than lecture to them. I develop individualized programs based on a student’s learning style, motivation, strengths and weaknesses. In test preparation, I often do survey tests to tell me what the student knows and doesn’t know,to be most effective with their time. I have taught inner city schools, public schools, private schools, alternative education school, summer school, adult classes and college extension courses; giving me a wide range of experiences with different students. I was trained well by the Literacy volunteers of America. I believe that my style is to help the student with repetition, while still making learning fun, via conversation and connecting the importance of what is being learned to every day life. Practiced for years as an attorney for NYS. Semi-retired now. I have also been a tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA) in Albany, NY. I met with a Korean graduate student at U. Albany and helped him learn English. I am also able to help in foreign language tutoring with German and French.

I very much enjoy teaching both children and young adults. It gives me great satisfaction in helping others achieve a higher level of knowledge and skills. In addition, I feel that tutoring is a two-way street, whereby both the student learns material from the tutor, while at the same time the tutor learns how to better present the material in a way that is conducive for the student's learning. As such I strive to create a teaching environment that is both welcoming, yet challenging. Lastly, when it comes to learning and teaching, I believe in perseverance. Not every student has the ability to comprehend and retain everything all at once. Therefore as a tutor I would strive to instill this quality in my students. Having received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University and the University of California in the area of physical science (Atmospheric Science),

I find that each person has a different learing style and try to find out what works for them. I also teach them that organization of thoughts and ideas are helpful in how they approach learning. I relate the subject matter to what is needed to learn and to something that they can relate to. I believein repetition and that all people can learn if someone takes the time to find out their individual learning style. I find helping other learn and be successful very rewarding to me and would love the opportunity to do so with your students.
