Genuine, personal interest in the child; establishing rapport; establishing the student's mastery level, then building from there (instead of an arbitrary line which creates anxiety); affirmation of every step of progress/success; recognition but careful use of errors in non-judgmental, constructive correction; ease in backing up for review when needed; positive verbal and behavioral reinforcement to the student, including reports to parents about same, all these are things that come to mind. Having worked in supplemental education for quite some time, I have learned to hone in on the unique understanding of each individual student's needs. I enyoy working with adults as well as children, diagnosing the fundamental needs and moving forward at each individual student's pace. My teaching style differs somewhat based on the student I am working with. An energetic, confidence-boosting style is the approach that I prefer, but I also understand that you must build rapport with your students to be able to do that. I have a masters degree in psychology, specializing in child development. During my undergraduate studies, I minored in music and English.
