More About This Tutor...

I graduated from Finger Lakes Community College with an AA in Elementary Education. I passed the NYS Teacher's Assistant Skills Test in 2006. I worked at BOCES as a tutor. I tutored high school, middle school and elementary school students. I also worked in the BOCES classrooms as a teacher's aide. I worked at BOCES for 3 years. I also worked at Happiness House as a substitute residential aide, and my duties included helping young residents with their homework and reading with them. I must also mention that I helped my own two children with their homework, and now I help their young children with their work.
If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel as though every student will have their own niche. They will have a special subject that they enjoy the most and one that they despise. I think that figuring out how the child studies for the subject they enjoy will lead to an understanding of how to motivate that student to learn the subjects that are more difficult for them. Also, if the student's teacher stays positive and pushes him or her towards success by means of positive reinforcement they will succeed.
While studying at SUNY ESF I held a position as a teaching assistant for Western Civilization. This involved grading exams and papers, preparing and giving lectures, and holding office hours to assist students with any questions or concerns they may have had. I also spent time volunteering to teach and after school science club through ESF Outreach for elementary / middle school aged children.

More About This Tutor...

I really enjoy working with all people, I understand that everyone has a learning style, but above all you have to work hard to get to the next level. I am patient, thoughtful and willing to offer my support. I think it's important to summarize the important parts of the subject and then have the student remember them and focus on how to manipulate those parts into useful problem solving skills. I know I can make a great instructor for you.
As a Cornell graduate of Biomedical Engineering, I was able to learn about a variety of subjects and gain a better understanding of multiple types of math and science. As an instructor for the Cornell ballroom dance team, I have taught classes for two years in addition to my tutoring in math and science for another two years. I have written up multiple laboratory reports and research papers as well as a final Master's project. My students ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

One of the advantages of my background is the variety of people I have worked with. Regardless of different cultures, races, socioeconomic backgrounds and ages, I have the unique ability to connect with people in a language they understand. I utilize this ability to teach by analogy, as many of the things I teach and tutor others on involve complex subjects that the student usually has no direct experience in. When not applicable (such as instructing a student in grammar usage), the other method is to encourage students to learn by doing while I coach, encourage, and draw out thoughtful answers along the way.
As a lifelong student of the humanities and English, I believe that the best way to learn is by teaching and helping others. As a result, whenever and wherever I have been, whether in academia, work environments, or with friends and family, I have sought to apply what I kn ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience across the boards. I have taught students from the first grade level to the college level. I have earned a BA and an MA, both in Physics with a focus on education, but opted to take all of my electives in Math and Earth Science, which has enabled me to have a further reaching range of abilities. I did a minor in history for the purpose of understanding not only the science of my work, but also where the science came from. This has enabled me to not just teach science and math but also teach it through a historical lens that gives students perspective on why their learning is relevant.
I like children to learn through exploring. This is not to say that I do not teach, but I plan lessons in a way that allows students to learn at their own pace. I feel like if I can put together a lesson that gives children a motivation to learn, they will learn on a deeper lev ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching. Tutoring has been my favorite job so far, and although I was unable to continue working with Tutor.com due to time restrictions, I now am free to work with students and would like to tutor again. I am extremely patient with students, and my solid understanding of subject matter allows me to think of multiple ways in which I can help a student through a problem. Many people describe engineers as socially backwards, but I am extremely well-spoken and am great at communicating my ideas. I am a firm believer that anybody can grasp any concept they want as long as they are given time and guidance to reach their own understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for 21 years now (wow, that's gone by fast!) and I love every second of what I do. I have also been a tutor in the district for the past 9 years, tutoring every subject possible--math, English, Social Studies, etc. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to get to know students who don't take French and also I love to teach other subjects outside my own area. Teaching is the best job there is--I get such a great energy from my students every day! I rarely miss a day of school, and I look forward to going in to work every morning. Everyone should be so lucky to have a job they absolutely love!
My teaching style.... depends on the day, depends on the students, depends on the topic. One minute I can be dancing around the room and the next we're having a more serious discussion. My expectations are very high and I always push my students to do "just a bit bet ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a high school special education teacher with a primary focus on ELA. Currently, I co-teach in integrated classrooms, grades 9, 11, and 12, with regular education teachers and we have designed a curriculum focusing on intensive writing to assist our students in passing the NYS ELA Regents. We have a 91% passing success rate for both regular education and special needs students. My strategies with special needs students is designed around their disability and I work with them on “coping” mechanisms to level the playing field to allow them to be successful on exams and in life. I have had experience with individual tutoring of students out on medical leave in my district as well as working with the 21st Century Program which is run through the state on a grant. As an undergraduate, I spent nearly three years assisting groups of students with how to learn content for the historically difficult courses of College Chemistry I and II. I have my BS in Nuclear Medicine Technology, which permitted me to learn and acquire a great understanding in multiple areas. These areas include biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, algebra, statistics, and beginning and intermediate levels of Spanish . In February 2011, I will be finished my MBA in Healthcare Management, which has broadened my knowledge in business courses, such as economics, accounting, marketing and finance. Throughout my education, I have mastered grammatical skills with the many research papers, essays, and lab reports that I have written.
