Mathematics can be fun,,, REALLY

Teaching Style : Teaching style has to adjust to student. I know the subject, I must know how the student learns and adapt my teaching to that.
I have been tutoring friends and family in mathematics for thirty years, and as I enjoy this I started Tutoring. I love mathematics and teaching mathematics. And I can teach a love or at least a like for mathematics. (and I have to have 300 characters here ?, I have been accused of rambling before, but can I make it to 300 ?, OH great I made it to 300)

I believe anyone can learn. Some may have to work harder at it than others. With others you may need to find different approaches but anyone can learn. In my classrooms I teach the individual students not the class. The biggest challenge for a teacher is giving the students the confidence that they can learn. Teach a student how to learn and he will learn anything he wants to.
I was a teacher at a Christian Boarding school in California for 27 years. I taught Junior High and High School Math and Science as well as Wood Shop, Metal Shop and Physical Education. Currently I teach High School Math and Science in Marsing, Idaho.

Making a difference in other people’s lives & having the pleasure to teach them valuable skills has been a gifted experience. With great leadership & enthusiasm I would like to continue this experience. My goal is to have my students master the main concepts & understand the theory not only to solve their homework problems but to solve any problem they may encounter in the future. I believe we all have a gifted unique mind set to solve problems & learning comes best from hand-on experience. Having students participate in class is one of my strategies to teach & test their ability & understanding of the problem. I have taught students in algebra/trigonometry, calculus, ordinary/partial differential equations, & several engineering courses.
One of my greatest tools has been mathematics. I enjoy working with numbers and solving problems. At Boise State University I was the coordinato ... read more

When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment. Once that learning environment is created, teaching is easy. I have worked with difficult students. One, who we will call John, has Autism, Schizophrenia, and vomits when upset. It was my job to teach John how to count money. After trying a variety of methods, we eventually found that learning in traditional environments was too stressful for John. So, we played Monopoly. People had been trying to teach him to count money for months, maybe years. Three weeks after I started with him, I took him to Walmart with a ha ... read more

Over the past 15 years or more I have mentored and coached hundreds of individuals. The primary areas of focus were math, statics (Statistical Process Control, Design of Experiments and Data Analysis) and Physics (Thermo Dynamics, Electronics and Modeling Processes plus problem solving).
I like to see people learn and the look on their faces once they understand. I do not believe that one style of teaching works for everyone. I like to work with the individual to evaluate how they learn before starting to teach.

I love working with children, as I have coached or tutored school aged children for the last six years. This has taught me to be very patient as well as given me the ability to approach a subject from three or four different angles until the student gets it. I often ask many questions in an attempt to get the student to come to conclusions on their own, rather than me telling them outright. This allows the student to put things in their own terms, a process which I believe allows for a deeper understanding of the material.
I have always loved Math and Science, which is what led me to complete a BS in Physics with a Minor in Mathematics. My education allows me to be confident in many areas of math and science. I recently tutored a high school student in the areas of Geometry and Chemistry, which took her from a C to an A. I also volunteered my time as a Matheletes coach for a local ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For the last five years, I have been helping children and adolescents with disabilities and, more recently, tutoring students at BSU. After five and a half years at BSU, I graduated with an elementary education degree. I have a background in mathematics and science, as both were previous majors I chose to pursue. During my last year of college, I was in the public schools where I taught and apprenticed under master teachers in both the 1st and 4th grades. Because of my experiences, I have taught a full spectrum of students, finding ways to engage them as well as help them learn.
Due to my background, I have learned patience and passion are essential for a student’s success. Further, not everyone learns the same way. Therefore, over the last five years, I have discovered multiple ways to explain something differently to help develop understanding. Further, I feel that your st ... read more

I believe if given the right tools, a student can and will succeed in education. If a student feels comfortable in the classroom, I believe that is the first step to the student succeeding. A student isn’t likely to care about work in a class where they feel the teacher hates them, or where the teacher is too easy or difficult. It’s very important for me, as the teacher, to get to know each and every one of my students so I can do the best to make them feel comfortable and important in the classroom. Once I get to know the student I can implement personal challenges and assignments that will cause the student to succeed.

Initially, I like to find out the basics. I want to know their underlying assumptions in any part of academia, whether it's math or science. I have come to find that the very simplest of assumptions can mislead students. I like to start each problem with a new set of assumptions, or a "given", "find", and "solution" step-by-step process. This allows the student to see the problem as a whole and if there are problems, be able to identify where they are beginning whether it's in the initial assumption or in the solution step.

Over the past year I have tutored through The College of Idaho's Chemistry Club. Chemistry, especially the math portions, never came easily to me. I had to work hard and spend hours asking professors questions, but now I am much better at chemistry because of it. As a tutor I wanted to help fellow students who were struggling as I had.
Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching, seeing that moment where a problem actually makes sense to someone. I am primarily a hands on teacher for physics especially though I am very comfortable with a lecture based teaching style.
During my tenure at Montana State University, where I majored in Physics with a minor in mathematics, I was a primary resource for other classmates for our homework assignments. A group of us was found almost daily before class checking over homework where I was usually the one that would help others with the more complicated problems. Recently I have been a TA for introductory physics class at Boise State University.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy math and have a passion for communicating math in an understandable way to all students. I enjoy working with middle school and high school students to help them find success in their current math classes. I believe that each student can find success at some level of math. I like to laugh with my students and enjoy our time working together. I am relaxed and patient and try hard not to add any more stress to a student's math load. I work to help each student succeed.
After graduating from Seattle Pacific University with a BA in Mathematics, I have been teaching high school math for the past ten years. I have taught all math courses from Algebra 1 through Pre-Calculus and AP Statistics. I returned to school while teaching and earned my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from SPU. For the last five years, I oversaw the middle school and high school math program and t ... read more
