I play professionally and teach a wide range of levels and ages I started teaching in 1988 as a college student. I played in the US Army Band. Upon graduation, I taught band and orchestra in Wichita KS public schools. I have been on the faculty of Friends University in Wichita, KS and Bethel College in Newton, KS. I taught private piano and bass students at Jim Starkey Music Center in Wichita, also. Many of my bass students have been in the Wichita Youth Symphony. I teach so called "classical" reading, and improvisation, once basics are under control.

My style is relaxed and informal, but effective. School already provides enough structure, and with a relaxed mind, information can be processed more easily. 1 hour sessions multiple times a week is the best way for the information to sink in. I have held informal teaching positions throughout my entire life. I have tutored everything from pre-algebra to Calculus to Piano. I'm currently employed as an after school tutor for middle school students, 6th grade to 8th, and independently tutor on Saturdays.

I absolutely love teaching. I have considered continuing my education and pursuing a secondary education teaching degree. I believe I am patient and kind, and provide a learning experience that is most beneficial to all. I think that students can have fun while learning, and I try to combine fun into my teachings. Although so many students don't believe it, anyone can solve a math problem! They just need to understand how to look at the problem the right way. I'm able to give the one on one attention that a teacher isn't able to. As a Civil Engineering student at the University of Michigan, I took classes that led to proficiency in math and science, as well as general classes that have given me a well-rounded education. I have been tutoring in Physics and Calculus for the past six years. I have also been playing guitar for 10 years, and have been giving lessons for four years.

I am going to school right now for a Associate Degree in Applied Science getting my General Studies completed. I will be transferring to WSU next year for a bachelor degree. Throughout my general studies I have focused on Sociology, Psychology, Business English. During the past 2 years I have had the opportunity to study with younger family members needing a tutor in the areas of Art, reading, math. I truly have the patience and love for all people and children. I myself had a tutor my father, who really had the patience with me and gave me the desire to become one myself. My original interest was teaching instrumental music. Although I changed majors and ultimately graduated with a BS in Computer Science, I have continued my interest in teaching, first by volunteer tutoring during college and later by helping adults learn to speak English. I eventually took an intensive summer course in teaching English to speakers of other languages, following which I spent over three years teaching conversational English in Central Asia. Upon returning to the States I worked for a few years for a literacy council, helping administratively and also teaching workplace English. I continue to play in orchestras and teach string instruments privately. I am in the process of completing a Master's degree in Teaching. I love working with children and with adults. I especially enjoy watching a child's eyes light up when something makes sense. I value the constructivist approach
