A Little Bit About Me...

As a seeker of truth with an acute interest in human nature, cognition and development, I am naturally drawn to education of today’s children to help construct the foundation for a sustainable tomorrow. I have earned two bachelor degrees, a BA in Philosophy and BA in Anthropology, which has enabled me to gain insight in the acquisition and development of thought, language and literacy. During the last nine years in the classroom I have learned and used practical teaching strategies and have taught students developmental strategies in literacy, math, science, and philosophy. I've learned over the years that in every situation, including the classroom, that in teaching writing, the instructor must begin where the student is, recognize and affirm existing positive skills and knowledge, and build on those. Having learned in a high-school volunteer reading tutorial program to never use the word "no," I utilize positive psychology to improve skills, confidence, and self-esteem. While working on my BS in Psychology I worked part time as a respite provider for children with brain, emotional, or behavioral disorders. Though I focused more on teaching social skills, I learned first hand that each child has a different way of learning and that not just one style is effective, especially for any special needs child. In addition to remaining patient throughout the learning process, I would strive to find whatever style of learning is most successful with each child's needs.
