My comments on tutoring English ESOL : I have spent the past 11 years as a language teacher and am currently completing my practicum to earn certification from a well-respected ELL certification program at University of Missouri-Columbia

I have spent the past eleven years instructing students in the area of language--both English and Spanish. I have taught at the high school level almost exclusively, but I am flexible to work with any students levels k-12. Students would characterize me as a teacher who cares about their past, their present and their future. I provide them with the skills they need to enter into a highly competitive world.
In the classroom, I use a combination of cooperative learning, comprehensible input, teaching through music, functional grammar, teaching reading skills in the target language and scaffolding instruction to meet the needs of all my students.

Statement of Teaching Philosophy As a student, I have observed that the best teachers were those who cared the most about teaching. This passion is one of the single most important components of effective teaching as it leads to thorough preparation, continuous evolution of teaching skills, and the pleasure of watching students learn. The amount of time that a teacher puts into preparation directly translates to how the students learn. However, a teacher must be able to recognize how students learn best at the group and individual level, and let their lesson plans metamorphose as they interact with their students. The ultimate goal for the teacher is to communicate new information to students, not just memorizing facts, but also to learn how to think. This process can be made more efficient when both the teacher and the students enjoy what they are covering. Combined, these aspects all ... read more

I believe that all children want and try to do their best, but sometimes need an extra push. I think it is necessary to use the appropriate curriculum, but to find out what teaching method works best for each student as we all learn differently. It is also important for each child/student to have some flexibility in what they learn in order to express their individuality and own creativity.
I have been caring for children of all ages for the last 9 years, which includes tutoring and metoring. I am also in my second year as a substitute teacher, in which I teach grades pre-k through 12th grade.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have accumulated 92 credit hours toward a Bachelor of Science in Education with an emphasis in Art. Currently I am involved with the Y-Read volunteer program and for the past few years have tutored one on one with adolescent children specifically in Reading and Language Arts. I have 2 years experience teaching one on one ESL to adults. I am a certified Foster Parent with the St. Louis Social Services Department. I have mentored to a "high risk" adolescent child in St. Louis City public schools. My academic interests are in the Arts, English and in combination with helping the child build confidence and esteem in their life.
Advocacy for the child is of utmost importance to me and working one on one with a child is a huge building block to enable the child to succeed. My attributes as a tutor are found in my gentle, fun loving, creative spirit. I am firm about learning and always ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style first and foremost is to not find translations. The easiest way to understand is to find the cultural equivalent. Because I have a passion for languages and teaching, patience is never a second thought. Throughout my educational career I have accumulated a variety of resources to assist in my teaching and find patterns that make it easier for the student to work with. I create homework, assignments and have fun. I am not rigid in my approach however I am fun and serious.
I decided to earn my BA in French since languages seemed like second nature to me. Additionally, I had to take Italian and I taught myself to read Greek. My tutoring started in high school when I successfully raised a students grade of F to an A in French. I also received an ESL Certification from London and used that here in St. Louis to teach ESL where I was employed at ELS. One of my st ... read more
