I enjoy helping students reach their full potential. I am respectful and considerate of each student. My teaching style consists of a combination of direct instruction and guided discovery. Each student learns at a different rate. I provide the appropriate methods of instruction for academic success. A have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with minors in education and chemistry. My understanding of science has been strengthened by completing 30 graduate credits in biology related fields and 23 graduate credits in chemistry. I have over 20 years of teaching experience in chemistry, including honor and advanced placement chemistry.

I base my teaching on the pholosophy of Eli Siegal: "Aesthetic Realism". It states that "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and a making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves" Thus, I relate the subject matter in hand to students' personal lives. For example, if we are learning Le Chartelier's Princlple, which concerns the response of a chemical reaction to stress, I have my students discuss the types of stress they experience, and their responses. We compare this to the beautifully precise and appropriate reaction in Chemistry, where the response is never inapproriate, insufficent or in excess. This method has also taught me that I have much to learn from my students and their life experiences. . I have a passion for teaching but waited until I gained some "real world" experience. I found that this has helped me relate to my students since I am able to make meaningful connections to their learning. I like to discover what my students already know about the topic and to expose any misconceptions. Brainstorming activities work well for me. I like to help define the topic in common terms, not the classic dictionary method. I use presentation, discussion, videos and hands on activities. Most of what I do is inquiry based.

The most important aspect of my teaching style is my ability to relax my students. I believe if you are in a relaxed environment, learning becomes easy. Chemistry is a difficult subject for many students and I am successful in giving my students the confidence that they can indeed understand the subject matter. Inorganic Chemistry was my favorite class of my academic career. I had fantastic teachers and decided when I had the opportunity to give back to academia, I would teach inorganic chemistry. After I finished my Ph.D I became an adjunct professor at a local community college. I have been teaching chemistry for five years.

My journey through the undergraduate sciences has given me the skills needed to be an effective tutor. Holding a 3.6 GPA, I was able to work with students in group settings, teaching as well as learning. As a member of the chemistry society, we also offered peer tutoring where I was an active participant. My bachelors degree consists of a minor in chemistry while majoring in exercise science. In addition, I have completed additional science coursework in preparation for my fall 2009 MCAT testing. I am currently on waitlists for several medical colleges and wish to further my knowledge of the sciences by interpreting it to others.
