My comments on tutoring World History : Love world history - critical to success as an International Relations major

A in AP U.S. History in High School, B.A. in International Relations and Russian Post-Soviet Studies from The College of William and Mary (3.4 GPA). 6 years of Russian language study, including a 6-week study abroad program in St. Petersburg, Russia, and 1.5 years living and teaching ESOL in Novosibirsk, Russia. 10 years of competitive running experience, including being captain of High School and University cross country and track and field teams.
Relaxed. I do not discipline students. If students want to learn they will put in the effort - I will not be their babysitter. I try to make class interesting, involved, and active, and to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

A Little Bit About Me...

I served as a tutor, primarily for English, History, and writing, for three years while attending Southern Vermont College. Following graduation, I worked for three years as a paraprofessional for Leland & Gray Union High School. While working in this capacity there were several one on one situations similar to the relationship that exists between tutors and their students. In addition to the aforementioned subjects I tutored while in college, I also assisted students in other areas such as basic math and general science.
I primarily use the Socratic Method (question and answer) as my teaching style. I believe that asking students the right questions helps them to learn the information. Because I have had to meet the needs of so many different students in so many different environments, I am flexible with teaching methods. A lack of resources overseas drove me to be creative and exercise methods of experiential learning: hands-on and engaged learning. I believe in creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for students, with some room for fun.
