A Little Bit About Me...

To teach is to "impart knowledge or skill to somebody by instruction or example" while education is defined as "to develop mentally, morally, or aesthetically especially by instruction". I aspire to be an educator, as defined above. While I believe in the content of the sciences, I am interested in evoking the thought process to utilize the scientific method as a problem solving technique applicable to all areas of life. Through life, didactic specifics of chemistry may wane, but the development of thought PROCESS -- that, to me, is true education. On a personal level, I use humor and positive energy that reinforces my strong belief that everyone has the ability and the right to learn.

I can offer a student a broad educational perspective with a Ph.D. in the medical sciences and 18 years experience in the Biotech industry. My teaching experience began on the faculty at the UMass Medical School (1993-1999), where I tutored high school, undergraduates and graduate students in problem solving, creative thinking, and scientific writing for publications and textbooks, presentations and grant applications. As a management consultant and entrepreneur I help people stay organized and multi-task effectively – both practical skills for students. During my Doctoral candidate years, I worked as both a engineering lecturer and laboratory instructor for 3 different engineering fields. The fields were circuit design, applied mathematics and practical laboratory equipment usage. I also gave lectures in Applied Optics (physics) for Seniors at Clarkson University during my last Doctoral year (1984-85) at campus.
Informal for large groups as I wanted the students to see me as like them, but with enough capability to inspire them to listen. I learned early on you cannot make anybody learn anything. You must inspire them to want to learn. At the 1-on-1 setting (tutoring level), I work at a very detailed level with the particular student I have with me at the time. Each one is sufficiently different to warrant different teaching approaches to maximum effect and retention.
