I believe that real learning takes place when students are actively engaged in the material. Finding the right materials to teach with will often inspire intrinsic motivation.
I have currently spent over 350 hours in a variety of school settings. From private school to public, first grade to twelfth, I have seen it all. The majority of my experience has taken place in a suburban middle school, however I have also spent a reasonable ammount of time working with inner city high school students. I double majored in college to recieve a bachelors degree in literature and writing, and spent a full year interning at a student run newspaper as a journalist and copy editor. I have tutored middle school students with a variety of learning disabilities, as well as SAT prep for high school students. I am currently registered for a series of NYS tests to earn my certification to teach.

I have tutored students in English throughout my tenure as a media specialist.

My approach to teaching relies heavily on the use of modeling. Modeling is a powerful tool in the development of not only writing and language skills, but also in exposing my students to a framework which will allow them to hone their own thought processes and work habits. Incorporating a wide variety of vocabulary-building activities into daily lessons strengthens my students' understanding of the subject area and provides a familiarity with language that will aid them in the ability to express themselves in a much more effective manner.
My teaching experience includes a wide variety of situations. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with children in grades kindergarten, one, two, three and four in a number of educational models, including multi-age groupings, departmentalized models and the traditional classroom. In addition to my work with younger stude ... read more

I graduated from SUNY@Oneonta with BS in English. I was going in the field of education but i wanted to graduate on time. After graduation, i was working in the field of retail. I still had the desire to teach so i signed up as a substitute teacher 5 years ago. I love teaching and currently in pursuit of obtaining my teaching certification in the field of 7-12 English.During the past five years, I have tutored a family friend's child. Now, he does not need my assistance because he is doing well in his classes.
I am aware of different ways of teaching methods. I like to get to know the student so I can engage his/her mind.I prefer the hands-on method and work from the child's work. I like to exam the child's work to address his/ her need. I found that Spectrum series helpful & websites to help the child's progress.

As A recent graduate from a Liberal Arts School, I found it easy to connect with teaching as my calling. I have always driven for high levels of excellence in and outside the classroom and work force. Having an English and Philosphy background, I find it easy to critically think and annotate extensively works of literature. And from that I find that my skills are up to par due to writing research papers and annotating other people's work. My experiance as a student teacher at a private school in rural VT, allowed me to expand the pupils' minds to outside their comfort zone in order to learn about the world we live and the connection it has to literature.
Teaching is not for everyone, but I knew it was for me when I started student teaching and felt the adrenaline rush of 25 eyes staring up at me for guidance. I feel the need to spread as much knowledge as possible to the up and com ... read more

I fundamentally believe anyone can learn. If a student isn’t grasping a concept, it just means I have to change my style of teaching. So what is my teaching style…anything that helps a student achieve his or her potential. But the one thing I teach all my students is how to find their learning style. Once you know how you retain information you can do anything.
How do I summarize teaching in my life? I guess the best way to explain my teaching experience is to tell you a story. As a young girl I wanted to be a teacher. Because of my love of learning I taught all my siblings how to read. I know it is pretty funny but it is a true story. That led to my doing teaching seminars, which led to consulting, which led to training, which led to my working with individuals as a life coach. I have been a CEO, Vice President, Consultant, Senior Broker, Artist, Photographer, Glass Blowe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I very much enjoy teaching both children and young adults. It gives me great satisfaction in helping others achieve a higher level of knowledge and skills. In addition, I feel that tutoring is a two-way street, whereby both the student learns material from the tutor, while at the same time the tutor learns how to better present the material in a way that is conducive for the student's learning. As such I strive to create a teaching environment that is both welcoming, yet challenging. Lastly, when it comes to learning and teaching, I believe in perseverance. Not every student has the ability to comprehend and retain everything all at once. Therefore as a tutor I would strive to instill this quality in my students.
Having received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cornell University and the University of California in the area of physical science (Atmospheric Scie ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Because I have had to meet the needs of so many different students in so many different environments, I am flexible with teaching methods. A lack of resources overseas drove me to be creative and exercise methods of experiential learning: hands-on and engaged learning. I believe in creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for students, with some room for fun. I acknowledge that every student possesses a different learning style and I strive to compliment that, especially while tutoring. I maintain high expectations and expect considerable progress. My hope is that armed with an education, youth will be incorporated into more decision making around the world.
I graduated with honors from a formal university, where I tutored fellow classmates; however, I gained most of my tutoring and teaching experience overseas, in a universal classroom. I have taught youth and a ... read more

After graduating from Baruch College, I worked in the inner-city Catholic School of Brooklyn. I taught 8th Grade English and had great success turning non-writers into eager learners. I was also the Math coordinator for grades 5-8. I have tutored college entrants having difficulty with essay writing. Most recently, I taught 5th Grade in a local charter school. The successful preparation of students to communicate via written skills has been a component of all my teaching experiences.
My style of teaching is predicated on the knowledge that each child is an individual learner. Identification of students needs makes teaching more interesting to both teacher and learner. I also like to have the child discover the importance of an education. Answer the need to know what's in it for me? Motivation!!!! After finding the motivator the rest is easy.
