A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a teaching and laboratory assistant for eight years through my undergraduate and postgraduate studies. I've focused on marine ecology, but I've also helped with field ecology, field biology, and marine biology. After finishing my PhD, I taught a marine biology course at my undergraduate university and thoroughly enjoyed the experience; however, I've decided to continue my research career in the way of a postdoctoral fellowship. Eventually I would like to have a research professor position, and do both!
I understand that everyone has different learning styles and different amounts of time to absorb material. I try to teach concepts in a variety of manners to reinforce key points and I try to keep it interesting to the individual. For instance, when I taught marine biology at IUS, each student chose their own, unique organism to study and write a literature review on thro ... read more

As a teacher, I work to build my students’ self-confidence through positive interactions and effective problem-solving. I believe that every person has the capacity to learn. I consistently adapt my teaching to the needs of the student and look for creative ways to help the student to understand. I recognize and affirm every effort to learn, every success not matter how small. I encourage students and know how to release the tension so students do not become discouraged. I am not a lecturer. I work to engage learners and identity ways to make learning fun. I look for ways to affirm a student's efforts and to build on each success.
My teaching experiences include college faculty member and home school teacher for my four children. They graduated from the Independent Study High School University of Nebraska, participated in Running Start and are all college graduates. I was ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a high school honors student, I majored in English and achieved the highest score possible (five -- 5) on the English Exam. In College, I pursued my interest in English language by majoring in Literature, with an emphasis upon etymology, linguistics, speech and rhetoric. My senior thesis on the poetic technique of Alexander Pope earned both an "Honors A" and that year's sole English Faculty Award. I later chose to attend a law school that was renowned for its general emphasis upon writing and, in particular, "plain English" legal communication.
I love to see students grasp a new concept and revisit their work with greater pride and confidence as a result. Realizing we all learn in differing rates and manners, I find great satisfaction in teaching in several ways at the same time (e.g., varying visual and auditory cues, telling stories and providing mnemonic devices). Having wo ... read more

I enjoy finding the teaching style that works best for each individual learner. Learning is a collaborative effort, and all individuals do not learn alike. I am patient with frustration, calm under pressure, and am able to create a positive learning experience especially for those who have experienced frustration or failure in the past.
I returned to college in my mid-40s to complete a Bachelor's degree, majoring in Biology, minoring in Chemistry and Pre-professional Studies. This enabled me to attain competent understanding of not only the hard science classes, but also to experience writing and presentation skills at the professional level. As a current Biology master's student, I continue to hone those skills as well as pass them on to others. I have many years experience mentoring college students with Biology, Chemistry, and Reading/Writing/Presentation skills. In addition, I ... read more
