A Little Bit About Me...

I am a certified and licensed elementary teacher and have 11 years of experience working in the classroom as a teacher and as a paraprofessional. I taught English as a second language, as well as Reading and Language Arts for 8 years in Denver, Colorado. I have experience working with children with special needs as well as students with learning disabilities. I have worked in an ESE classroom teaching math and science to 4th and 5th grade students. I have also had many other practicum experiences in schools and have worked with students as a whole group, small group, and individually. I have strong curriculum knowledge, am caring and patient, and love working with students.
I like to motivate my students by providing background knowledge and examples of application in the world outside of textbooks. I think it is important for students to create an emotional experience to ensure that knowledge will be stored. I like to challenge my students to reach their potential. I realize there is a fine line between challenging and frustrating my students. I like for my students to figure out math problems on their own as much as possible. My teaching style is to model new material, do guided practice, and independent practice. Hopefully by the time they finish this process they have mastered the particular lesson.
I decided at the age of 38 to attend college and earn my BA of Education degree. I have worked with and coached young people most of my life on a volunteer basis. Teaching has always been one of my passions. I have worked with students with learning disabilities in my eleven years of teaching. I have taught all the core subjects from grades 3-12. My favorite subject to teach/tutor is math. I enjoy seeing my students progress in their learning.
