Presently retired. 25 years of teaching locally at Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne and at ITT in Fort Wayne. Other localities include Idaho, Arizona, and South Carolina. 20 years as an engineer on Government Projects including the Minuteman Missile, Loss of Fluid Test reactor, Roland Missile Project, Parts of the Lunar Excursion Module etc. My success in tutoring was more visible to me at ITT in the period between 1995 to 2006. I love teaching and find that I, as well as my students, learn by teaching and interactively asking questions and seeking answers together. I believe that all students learn differently, so I try to use a varied approach of general lecture review, drawing visual aids, asking students to teach me a concept, developing ideas in multiple processes and working through problem sets. I believe the greatest thing about knowledge is the ability to share it. I love to learn, but that is only the first step. The true reward comes in being able to impart that knowledge of someone else. However, each person learns differently. Whether in a classroom setting or one-on-one tutoring, it is imperative that the teacher learn how each student learns. This allows them to teach in a manner that produces the greatest results in students. At Purdue University I took all Engineering degree mathematics courses. In addition, I took five statistical cources, three of them were graduate level. At AlliedSignal, I received a week's training to teach three day courses in Total Quality Leadership to employees. Over the course of one year, I conducted twenty four courses with a partner facilitator. One company I worked for was a supplier to Caterpillar. In the course of mutual problem solving, I was able to be certified as a Green Belt. My teaching style is to provide several ways to solve a problem. Since learning is done in different ways, one of the solution methods will turn on a light bulb and the student will "get it". I bring additional materials and new ways to remember. Last fall I tutored a fifth grader in mathematics. I provided note cards for him in the various solution formulas.

I always try to involve students in the lesson a great deal and to make sure that they are answering many questions throughout the lesson. This helps the student to be able to focus and learn and it helps me to know whether they understand. I like to use a variety of examples and demonstrations of the concepts and for students to try a few problems on their own. I really enjoy being able to help a student succeed in mathematics especially when it is not something they enjoy. I want mathematics to become relevant to students and to help them succeed in this subject area.
