A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching in a hands on style in which the student not only has an algorithm of how to solve a specific problem, but has a thorough understanding of the concepts behind the algorithm. I enjoy having analogies or hands-on activities to demonstrate the concepts. I believe that many times people understand the basic concepts from physics in their daily life, but are frightened by equations. Using analogies or hands-on examples initially reinforces their knowledge and increases their confidence which decreases the fear of equations. Besides reduces fear, it improves their ability to share complex concepts with others in simpler terms.

I feel it is important for students to learn not only what the answer is to a given question, but also understand the concepts and reasoning behind the answer. With this in mind, my teaching style usually walks a student through a concept thoroughly, utilizing problems to guide understanding. I find it beneficial to first gain an perceptive of where the student is at, walk them through the concept, and discuss problems step-by-step until a solution is reached. Once the concept is grasped, I often have students walk through additional problems so the student is assured that they understand the topic. Although this is the style that I have found to be most successful, I am flexible to a student’s needs and their learning style.

For the subjects I tutor, my style is 'pushing a pencil'. Only a genius can handle these subjects without doing problems. Everyone else, if they want to learn the subject must do problems. Usually the problems worked are the ones with answers in the back of the book. I'm careful not to do problems that are assigned as homework. Besides, I have all my books at home, and I know students will not have the same problems assigned as the ones I choose to do out of my 20 year old books.
While getting an Associates degree in Math, I tutored college math, algebra, physics, chemistry, & calculus. The subject I like to tutor the most is differential calculus. One young lady I tutored named Glenda Lenahan, having made an F on her first calculus test, requested that I tutor her. When she took the second test she mad a 98. As a recipient of higher levels of education, I know the career opportunities that such an education opens up later in life. And I am motivated to share my knowledge and inspire others to access those opportunities as well. The first thing I do is to determine the level of learning that a student is open to and start there. That helps me to adjust my teaching according to the needs of the students. I am a patient teacher and I allow the students to reach their potential through gentle guidance.

I am an easy going individual who attempts to make learning fun and relate it to real life examples. With physics and calculus, there are many instances when assignments can be very difficult to comprehend because it's difficult to see how a derivative or integral relates to real life situations. I do my best to try and simplify difficult problems into easy steps that a student would already know. I feel that the best way to fully learn something though is to do it yourself. Repetition in school and sports is really the best way to improve and is a theory I strongly believe in.
With my bachelor degree in Civil Engineering, I have developed a strong understanding and comprehension of math and science. I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor. Math and science has been a strong area of mine, as I was a Supplemental Instructor for a genetics course for two semesters, as well as being a Laboratory Assistant that assisted students with questions or problems during genetics laboratory. I took a course entitled "Teaching Evolution" in which students developed their own teaching styles, specifically based in the scientific disciplines.
