Unique Tutor

I often use word games or riddles as rewards for good work. It motivates effort from my students and makes them listen more closely. With my esl students, I made sure to apply new words to their life in order to gain the most retention of the new vocabulary words. The approach I use of ask students to draw from their own lives in order to illustrate meaning and comprehension encourages a dailogue that works well with any vocabulary words for any age group.
Substitue teacher and esl tutor for the past 4 years. I worked with various classes from Algebra to IEP classes and ESL, from Science to Social studies and everything in between. I taught classes and did not hand out worksheets. My rules in class were, you dont waste a class period. I used litle tricks to make sure they did not waste time and actually learned from me. My students often come up to me when they see me in public to ... read more

If you have the desire to learn then you can learn!

I am very patient and I don't miss a step in any problem!
I have worked very hard to go from learning fractions to calculus as an adult and have struggled very much with learning, but now since I have been there, I am able to help many people of all different levels in math to be successfull too! I am all to familiar with the feeling of "I can't learn this subject" "I am not smart enough to do it" I can tell you that anyone can do it with alittle hard work and desire.

A Little Bit About Me...

I started tutoring in high school, where I spent my summers volunteering as a teaching assistant at Breakthrough Summer School (a program I also attended as a student when I was entering 5th and 6th grade) in classes that ranged from Math to Biology. As an undergraduate, I further gained teaching experience through a UCSD grant for tutoring 6th-8th grade Math at middle schools (identified with a high percentage of military families) in the San Diego Unified School District. Furthermore, in volunteering with the International Rescue Committee, I had the opportunity to work with quite diverse populations in San Diego through assisting (high school age) refugees from all over the world with ESL coursework. During the fourth year of undergrad, I interned as a teaching assistant for two lower-division general education courses (World History to 1500 C.E. and American History to Reconstruction ... read more

My comments on tutoring Psychology : I've received a minor in Psychology, as well as a degree in Mathematics and Criminology.

I tutored one of the students in my High School in his Algebra class. During the course of the tutoring, his grades on his test progressively increased. His final grade in his class was a "B." While attending college, I applied to become a Peer Tutor at Capital University. I was offered a position as part of the tutoring staff, and over the course of the two years in which I worked as a Peer Tutor, I helped a lot of Undergraduate students in all of the courses that I felt the most comfortable in, including Business Calculus, Calculus for the Biological Sciences, Geometry, Trigonometry, etc. I had many regular students during the course of the two years in which I worked as a tutor. I enjoyed helping them, and they seemed to understand the course material better over the course of the semester. I loved helping all the different students, too.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my undergraduate education at the Ohio State University, I was involved in a science heavy major, Nutrition and Community Health. The core sciences were mainly in the area of chemistry and biochemistry. Though I do not have experience with tutoring or teaching for school, I have some experience with teaching and mentoring through the Army National Guard. I am responsible for training up to 10 soldiers some basic knowledge of our job specialty.
I feel that teaching is a dynamic affair; everybody learns a little differently. Knowing this, it is a must to be open with the students allowing them to ask questions as needed and asking them questions about the material to help them through the problem. In doing so, you allow the student to learn how to work through a problem to find the answer.

I enjoy teaching children of all ages, but I prefer to teach children within the middle school and high school ages. I feel that those times are critical to their learning and retention of information. I appreciate what I do or have done when I can see success with a student achieving knowledge within their particular area of study.

I believe the best way to teach students is by utilizing a variety of learning styles. For example, for a visual learner, diagrams and pictures should be used but in order to compliment that repeating audible explanations would be great for someone who is an auditory learner. For any learner, the amount of repeated material provides for good review for students to make connections and the material to be cemented into the human mind.
Having the chance to attend one of the largest universities in the world has truly allowed me to experience opportunties to influence young minds. I've worked with both high school and college students, both gifted and disadvantaged students, and I believe that the key to being a successful tutor is understanding your student and how he/she learns. Through my experiences, I've learned how to explain subject matter in a way that enables students to repeat back to me in their own words what I just explained. This is critical. I believe students learn best by understanding first, and memorizing when applicable. I'm able to gauge where my students are in their education and get them where they need to be.

I am driven as a tutor because I love to learn. I love to experience the interconnectedness of subjects and to share these revelations with the students that I am working with. I have a passion for learning that spreads over several academic areas. I not only graduated cum laude with molecular genetics as my major but also took on a minor in entrepreneurship because I realize the opportunities for growth in the field of biotechnology. I have aided disabled students with microbiology and chemistry in the lab setting. It was greatly fulfilling. In addition to my work with disabled students, I have taught English to non-native speakers from countries as disparate as Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Brazil.
When tutoring, I feel it is best to sit back and review the student's work and watch him/her in action. Once I have established where he/she needs work, I show the student a di ... read more

Since I find Biochemical processes so exciting, it is easy for me to get other students excited about them as well. Many students feel that the sciences are boring and dull. However, when I explain the processes to the students in their own terms instead of the textbooks they begin to realize that it can be fun! The first step to getting a student to understand the natural sciences is to spark some interest. This can be done through visual aids, models and a variety of other non-tradtional approaches.
