As a Siena College graduate I developed a very hands on approach to active learning. Through classroom lecture and instruction I've completed the necessary coursework to complete my BS of biology. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.
I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself. When I try to teach someone, I always explain to them the subject as basic and simple as possible. I give a few examples, and then help them figure it out themselves. Though applicable to any subject, for science and math I adhere to the inquiry method. I'm believe in the teacher finding something interesting in what is being taught, asking leading questions with which the students answer, and having the students learn through their answers. Lecturing is my least favorite method, and I believe the least effective.
