Licensed Teacher. Highly qualified K-8.

My experience has taken me across grade levels as well as across the world. In college, I studied educational methods, theories and philosophies as well as human development. During this time, I participated in classroom practicums (aiding with individual/ small group instruction) and then eventually student taught full-time for 1st and 5th grade. Over the summers, I worked abroad in Germany and Italy with children on military bases for a program called Camp Adventure Youth Services. I provided educational and recreational services for children and youth from ages 5-11. During the academic years, I worked at after school programs helping with homework for the Boys and Girls Club based in Corvallis. While earning my Master's in Scotland, I worked for a similar program at a private school called George Heriot's with children and youth from ages 5-11. My comments on tutoring Math : Elementary and middle school levels.

I taught elementary school in the 4-J School District. I later returned to graduate school at Portland State University for an MA to teach English as a Second Language and taught ESL to immigrants at Lane Community College. While living in Montana for a few years, I taught phonics, reading, and math with small groups of children in the Title One program in the Eureka Public Schools. Most recently I taught English to international students at the American English Institute at the University of Oregon.
I am very patient, encouraging, and supportive. I start with what students know and build from there, selecting appropriate materials to provide practice and continued learning.

I love working with people and have done my best to always be doing so throughout my life. While in high school, I tutored and mentored other high school students. While in college, I started working with all age groups (pre-K through college), working as a mentor and a tutor for fellow college students. I have learned the importance of adapting my teaching style to the person that I am working with in order to help them succeed. I want every person that I help to reach his or her full potential. I will feel exceptionally honored if you choose me to make a difference in your child’s life.
I hold a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies, providing me with a well-rounded college education. In addition to that, I am currently seeking a Masters degree in Education. I love working with people from a wide spectrum of ages, backgrounds, and abilities. I believe everyone has a capacity to learn and grow, and I find great personal enjoyment in seeing a struggling student begin to blossom. I am patient, supportive, and compassionate. I greatly enjoy my current job, but miss the opportunity to be involved in human growth and education. I would love the opportunity to help students to find their own personal academic success.

I strongly believe that education is a life-long learning experience, that children are able to learn from each other, that a teacher can facilitate the learning process and that students and teachers are able to learn from each other. I endorse the theory that all children can learn, but also recognize that they are unique individuals, who may process learning in different ways. It is, therefore, important to use the teaching method/techniques/strategies that best work with each students. I am an advocate of bringing real life into the classroom and/or taking students on field trips to experience things first-hand. I would embrace individual student differences and build on them, not only using traditional methods, but also those that are creative, innovative and hands-on. I would like to make the classroom a fun place, where students enjoy instruction and accept responsibility for ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My career passion has always been to work with kids. I received a BA degree from the University of Oregon in Family & Human services. I began working right out of college with homeless and runaway street youth as a caseworker for almost 3 years. As you can imagine, this job was heart breaking and emotionally taxing. I wanted a more positive avenue to work with students so I pursued my teaching degree. I was hired in South Lane School District in 2002 and have stayed for the past 4 years. I taught 6th grade Language Arts, Social Studies, and Reading my first year. For the past three years, I have been teaching 6th grade Math and Science. I am passionate about Math and Science. Along with the core classes I have taught, I have also taught several electives: 6th grade health, art, cooking, and study skills. I have recently graduated from Grove City College (PA) with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology. During my undergraduate studies, I was introduced to a curriculum largely in the fields of chemistry, physics, advanced mathematics (calculus I,II,III),genetics and biochemistry. I was exposed to a very rigorous survey of the general sciences with demanding writing requirements. Likewise, I am very proficient at communicating in the language of science. I have also taught several mid-term and final review sessions as an upper classmen.
As a counselor for two summers at Camp Harlow (eugene, OR), I had my hands full playing, mentoring, and getting know up to twelve kids every week from the ages of 5-14. During this time, effective communication skills were paramount to success along with patience and listening. I work hard to communicate clearly and simply on an appropriate level. T ... read more

Everyone has a distinct learning style and attitude. I relish the opportunity to present subject matter to students in the precise manner that invokes that "eureka" moment where they finally achieve understanding of something that has frustrated, intimidated, or eluded them. I use humor and positive reinforcement to inspire confidence in my students. I believe that all people can learn, regardless of age or experience. They just need the proper guide.
I am driven to learn as well as to teach. I have a BS in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences and an MA in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, both of which have afforded me great experience not only in the sciences but also in writing skills. Over the last 11 years, I have taught and tutored students from elementary-aged to adult in English, writing, science, math, and test prep.

A Little Bit About Me...

There really is nothing I enjoy more than a good tutoring session. I like passing on the knowledge I have, and especially to students who have trouble, and then find success in working with me. I introduce every new math idea in the purest conceptual form, and then I show the student the practical use they can apply in their homework or on tests. I am a big fan of flashcards or a sheet of notes that reflect everything we learned in the session together. It enables me to show the parents our progress, as well as a resource for the student to refer to for help during homework or test prep. I have found that my methods work well for students who struggle with the basics and want to pass a class, and it also works well for students who are already at the top of their class, and just want a boost to cement their understanding or prepare for a future class.
