A Little Bit About Me...

I presently teach at a K-12 private school for students with learning differences. I have taught students in all grades, K-12. This year, I have been a remediation teacher in reading (decoding), math, and writing. In math, I am comfortable teaching through geometry. I have 10 plus years teaching students with dyslexia and other reading deficits with their decoding and spelling skills. Through programs that implement Orton-Gillingham approaches, I have found great success.
Teaching is not a job for me, it is what defines me. I have been teaching for over 13 years and still desire to do nothing else. My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.
