My style of teaching really depends on the student and his/her learning style. Different students learn in different ways. I believe it is my responsibility to find which style works best for the student(s).
First teaching job was in a school for severely autistic children. After being there for a year I taught in a residential home for boys. This was challenging but probably one of my favorite jobs as a teacher. Because of the distance from home to work (about 1-1/2 hrs.), I applied at an urban school 20 minutes from my home. My first job there was managing the Young Parents Program. This was a program for high school girls who were pregnant or had already had a child. When I taught sailing to young kids, I used to dress up like a pirate. I have lots of energy. I know I'm doing my job right when kids start laughing. When I taught to teenagers, I kept in mind my own experiences at that age. If I'm helping a student study hard on that big, important test that might have the ability to crush the student's soul - I bust out my acoustic guitar and sing about how It's The End of The World As We Know It (And This Test Means Very Little In The Long Run).

For the past fifteen years, I have pursued my aims in the field of higher education. Most of my teaching experience has focused on children with special needs; however while studying at St. Joseph's College, I was particularly attracted to the subject of Reading. Talking with students and analyzing their work samples determines their needs. I ask students to complete a "multiple intelligence" survey to determine their learning strengths. In designing delivery of services I incorporate specific strategies to complement their learning styles. In May 2008, I received my BA in Elementary Education and Sociology. Upon graduating, I took a summer job working as an Aid for a Collaborative Program. In December 2008, I was hired as a Severe and Profound Special Education Teacher for the collaborative.
