First teaching job was in a school for severely autistic children. After being there for a year I taught in a residential home for boys. This was challenging but probably one of my favorite jobs as a teacher. Because of the distance from home to work (about 1-1/2 hrs.), I applied at an urban school 20 minutes from my home. My first job there was managing the Young Parents Program. This was a program for high school girls who were pregnant or had already had a child. This program allowed the young girls to attend school. Due to budget restrictions it was cut. I was offered a position as a special education teacher in the high school. I have been doing that for the past 15 years. I taught American History, Geography, World History, Government, English, Reading, Reading Intervention and Wilson Reading. I retired this past June and moved from Connecticut to Asheville.

I recently graduated cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with two Bachelors of Science in Marine Geology and Maritime Law. I teach sailing and environmental education in the summers. This means very little however as I aspire, one day, to become a lighthouse keeper. Sadly, few can find such a position these days. I enjoy writing, science, mathematics, literature and most all music.
When I taught sailing to young kids, I used to dress up like a pirate. I have lots of energy. I know I'm doing my job right when kids start laughing. When I taught to teenagers, I kept in mind my own experiences at that age. If I'm helping a student study hard on that big, important test that might have the ability to crush the student's soul - I bust out my acoustic guitar and sing about how It's The End of The World As We Know It (And This Test Means Very Little In The Long Run ... read more

I truly enjoy working with children, and I welcome the challenge of working with students who struggle with reading. I regard reading skills as the key to success in the educational process, and I believe that given the proper encouragement, all students can achieve success in this area. I strive to be a catalyst in their success.
For the past fifteen years, I have pursued my aims in the field of higher education. Most of my teaching experience has focused on children with special needs; however while studying at St. Joseph's College, I was particularly attracted to the subject of Reading. Immediately after receiving the Master's degree, I enrolled in the Six-year program in Reading at the University of Connecticut.

I believe that education is a fundamental pillar in a person's life, that anyone can learn, and that people can teach each other. My goal is to help students learn what they need to be successful by using hands-on approaches where they can manipulate subject matter and "own it," meaning that they understand it thoroughly. I believe that teaching is reciprocal; in that I can teach for a student to learn and also that a student can teach me so that I can learn. I would strive to inspire a curiosity of learning and loving to learn by providing students with the experiences and opportunities to become comfortable with the material being studied. My motto for teaching is “Let go and jump in” because the only way students can learn and “own it” is by letting go of their fears in learning and get their hands into the subject matter.

As a recent graduate of Salve Regina University, I am eager to continue my work with early childhood and elementary students. I have volunteered in a Head Start preschool. There I created and initiated fun activities that focused on all aspects of child development. After that, I worked in a second grade inclusion classroom where I learned how to differentiate for physical, behavioral and learning disabilities. Now, I am substituting for multiple school districts. I have been working in kindergarten, first, and second grade classrooms. It is my goal to combine my early childhood experience with my ability to be a compassionate, outgoing, dedicated tutor who will make a positive contribution to your child's education.
I believe that every student is a unique individual that has the ability and desire to learn. Ultimately, my goal is for each one of my students to reach his or her fu ... read more

With normal class size groups... the goal is to provide a lesson with real educational content but to deliver it in a totally entertaining format... usually organizing the students into groups to a) provide support for the challenged and b) excitement for the total class as each group competes against the others. one-on-one teaching requires that the objective(s) be well established and then carefully focus on the individual student's best learning method, be it: verbal, written, reading, hands-on, or all of the above. In general a good teacher will be well planned and offers a delivery which teaches in concentrated bursts, with a brief break every 20 minutes.

As a progressive educator, I believe in attainment of the standard benchmarks by individualized methods, utilitizng a spectrum of teaching modalities. My personal affect is cheerful and professional, although I believe that learning should be fun, and with me, it is.
Prior to my second career in the field of service to at-risk senior citizens, I taught English for four years at Westport High School. Following the reduction in force made necessary by budgetary constraints, I taught for ten years at the Crystal Springs School in Assonet, MA as a Special Needs teacher. While rewarding, I missed the challenge of more literary pursuits and began teaching evening classes at a local communuity-based organization. My tutoring experience had its inception in that setting.

A Little Bit About Me...

Learning is a team effort. I believe my experience as a Division I cross country runner has endowed me with a team mentality I use each time I tutor a student. Establishing a team setting reassures those I tutor that we will work together to achieve every goal we set. Because I have tutored students of all ages, I can easily identify what must be taught and how to teach it to meet a student's specific needs and learning style.
In my four years as a professional tutor at the University of Evansville writing center, I focused on improving all aspects of a well-written essay, including the researching process. A Little Bit About Me...

With a Master of Education in Special Needs I acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to adapt instructional practices for diverse learners. Working in partnership with the child, parent(s), and school districts I developed meaningful learning activities addressing the specific academic needs of the child. I have tutored children and young adults whose abilities ranged from special needs to advanced placement. I have taught mathematics, writing, reading, social studies and science throughout elementary, middle school and high school.
Talking with students and analyzing their work samples determines their needs. I ask students to complete a "multiple intelligence" survey to determine their learning strengths.
