A Little Bit About Me...

My classroom setting is focused on the student and their needs. I heavily rely on repetition and object lessons to aid the students in comprehension and application. Depending on the age group, the beginning of my class (10 minutes) will require some exercise and/or Stretch and Flex routines to aid the student in concentration, the next session will be review, and the last session will be new material. As an Associate Research Professor at Duke University I conducted research on the health of the elderly population and the genetic background to age-related diseases. I am well published, always serving as my own statistician. The background to most common disorders in adults is complex involving multiple genes, thus I used advanced fuzzy latent class analysis to identify high and low risk sets of gene variants and to define the level of risk for individuals. I have collaborated with graduate students and taught genetcs to medical students. As a co-founder and the scientific director of Matrix Genomics, Inc. I relate genetic concepts to others on a daily basis.

I believe that in order for students to obtain knowledge, they must develop some level of interest in the subject. As a teacher, I try to understand the student's mind in order to present the material in such a way that it will fit together with the student's preexisting knowledge. If a student is passionate about sports or video games, I try and use examples and metaphors from those respective areas within the lessons. Students must to be shown rather than told why a subject is important, and I believe that effective learning happens when teachers build on the knowledge base that students have already developed experientially throughout their lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have classroom experience at the elementary and secondary level. While working on my AA degree I worked at a high school in a Language Arts class. Earlier in my education process I worked in a 2nd grade and a 3rd/4th grade class. I worked as a sub at the middle and high school level. I have extensive knowledge in all Humanities subjects, especially writing skills. I can utilize a myriad of different methods to meet the learning needs of a diverse student population. I especially like to use methods my students can relate to or connect with their own lives.
