On-the-job math is almost always done using Microsoft Excel, so I can show you how to do almost anything on a spreadsheet. Ive been a TV broadcast engineer, and taught video production in a public high school. Ive been an avionics technician, a solar PV installer & designer, and a thermal analyst for solar buildings. In most jobs Ive ever held, I ended up being the one who trains new people...just because I love to help people learn things.
I have two technical-college degrees, I worked my way through both of them being a math tutor, and have used math and science in some way in every job I've ever held. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. Hands-on learners sometimes need to have creative input and control over the situation, and manipulatives allow the student and me to model the problem in a whole new way.

A Little Bit About Me...

My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. A Little Bit About Me...

As an Associate Research Professor at Duke University I conducted research on the health of the elderly population and the genetic background to age-related diseases. I am well published, always serving as my own statistician. The background to most common disorders in adults is complex involving multiple genes, thus I used advanced fuzzy latent class analysis to identify high and low risk sets of gene variants and to define the level of risk for individuals. I have collaborated with graduate students and taught genetcs to medical students. As a co-founder and the scientific director of Matrix Genomics, Inc. In teaching, setting expectations is important... expectations of what the goal is; what they will learn, and then adapting it to the abilities of that individual.
