I believe that listening is a key to helping a student succeed in a subject matter that may not come easily to them. Building on a child's strengths and trying to find a "way in" that makes sense to them is a good strategy. Using creativity and "outside the box" approaches to learning can help a child access their latent abilities. Writing is such a powerful tool, not only for self-expression but for changing the world and for success in many professions-- I try to highlight the importance of writing to students' lives whenever possible, to connect the writing process (and literature) to their passions and to get them excited about it.

I began my apprenticeship in academia as a peer tutor for the College of Santa Fe's Student Support Services/TRIO Program (program of academic support for first generation, low-income students and students with learning differences or physical disabilities). I tutored students in writing, biology, religion, philosophy, political science, literature, psychology, Spanish and cultural history. My philosophy for effective education is comprised of six components creativity, character, culture, civic capacity, shared governance and student centeredness. I believe student centeredness is the trunk and the other components are the branches. Each component is connected to the other and they share common characteristics. For me teaching is about making the connection for students between the literature, writing, piece of art or media and their lives. By using the six components I can facilitate the learning process and enable my students to find a thread of meaning in the lessons I present.
