I generally try to think of new and creative ways to explain grammatical concepts and general writing concepts if I'm not being clear. Basically, my tutoring sessions involve a lot of conversation. The realization that children do well in small group instructional settings, and on an individual tutoring basis, is what I took most from my years in the classroom. My focus is to ascertain the instructional level needed, then instruct for that standpoint. I do not like busywork, but instead look for progress in the individual child.
