Three teachers impacted my life not only as a result of the content of their classes but in their delivery. All three approached learning as an adventure. Even though the topics ranged from sixth grade mathematics to fluid dynamics each teacher keyed their presentation on the reception of the students. If the first presentation didn’t get the topic across an alternative presentation was made, often in a humorous vein. Students were never allowed to feel inadequate. After receiving an undergraduate degree (physics and math) and a graduate degree (teaching secondary mathematics), I taught secondary math for several years. I then returned to school (PPCC) to study Computer Aided Drafting (CAD). I eventually became the CAD instructor, as well as teaching developmental math, college algebra, and Microsoft Office. I have frequently tutored friends or their children with their math studies.
I enjoy teaching secondary and college mathematics courses. I find great satisfaction working with students who are struggling (I have had my own struggles). I am always eager to allow students to learn by discovery. Using real-life examples that relate to things students are interested in is a very effective way of permanently seating concepts in their minds. It also makes math a little more fun and the repetition a little more tolerable.

I have realized that the best test of whether you understand something is to be able to teach it successfully to another person. Though being prepared is not a direct part of the tutor-student interaction, it is absolutely necessary for the tutor to be prepared far beyond the basic level. Prior to that I earned a BS in Computer Science which included a mathematics minor and courses in physics and chemistry.
