Not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire

I am a homeschool mother of four, including two dyslexic students that I have been individually tutoring for four years using the Barton Reading & Spelling System. Prior to that I taught third grade in the public school system for three years. I continue to hold a current Virginia teaching license and further my own education and professional development by pursuing opportunities to learn more about educational philosophies and methods.
Orton-Gillingham Approach (multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative) I am currently completing the Dyslexia Certificate Program through Dyslexia Training Institute.

As a College graduate, I was dedicated to the advancement of myself and others. I have earned a degree in Mass Communications, yet have had the opportunity to Substitute Teach, be a Para-Professional, and also teach at-risk student in a one-on-one setting as a Homebound Instructor for 2 years. These experiences have garnered a sense of urgency within me to reach as many students who are at risk; students who often lack the background to challenge them to complete their education. I enjoy teaching students through a variety of methods including traditional, hands on, and student specific. I am a special education teacher and have worked with a wide range of students with various abilities as well as disabilities: mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional disorders, and autism. I remediate students with and without disabilities who have done poorly on SOL tests as well as struggling readers. I have taught all subjects at the middle school level and am highly qualified to teach English and math as based on No Child Left Behind (NCLB). I have tutored for 2 years in the afternoons in all subjects, but main concentration being in middle school English and math.
I believe that all children can learn but they don't all learn the same way.
