Math and Science Tutor high school to college age.

Flexible, I try to adapt the material to the student's learning style and needs. Emphasizing the points that they get, and using analogies to clarify the information as needed. I love working in small groups and seeing people "get it."
Tutored for about ten years as needed. Experience with high school and college math and science. I am working toward a nursing degree and intend to complete a degree in mathematics education for high school ages. A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my high school career I have been devoted to academic success of my fellow classmates as well as my self. I continued this attitude in the accomplishment of achieving a BS degree in biology. Along the way of my academic success I have acquired multiple skills in every subject that has added to my love of learning and discovering. Over a fifteen year period I have used the knowledge that I have obtained to aid in others in their own pursuit of academic achievement.
I take the necessary time to learn the behavior and learning ability of the child in order to customize a teaching style that will be most beneficial. I believe that the most effective type of relationship between a teacher and a student is friendship to reduce any anxieties that may otherwise hinder the child’s progress. I am calm, well mannered, kind and devoted to the success of others. Teachers should be fi ... read more

The most important thing to me in teaching anyone anything is finding out what level they are currently at. In order to learn something, take something in and understand it, one must have something already to attach it to in their minds. I like to adapt my teaching to the personality and learning style of whoever I am teaching, and think that a big part of teaching is help and encouragement. I have a very laid back attitude but feel passionately about problem solving - nobody is going to learn if they are not relaxed and at ease. I have had a blast watching my own child grow and learn as I have homeschooled the last few years. I also have loved tutoring high school students whenever I had the opportunity.
I have a passion for education and helping others. I also love math and problem solving. I have earned my BS in Business with a major in MIS, and have completed many extra ... read more

I have spent 4 years as a Spanish teacher and the past two years as a substitute teacher while working on my master's degree in Special Education. I have had many experiences with many different levels of learners both as a Spanish teacher and as a sub. Subbing has given me the opportunity to work with kids K-12 in a variety of different learning levels and subject areas. I try to get most of my sub days in special education classrooms to ready myself for my upcoming start to a new career. Focusing more on special education has allowed me to work more closely one on one with students much is the way of tutoring.
2 years ago when I quit teaching Spanish I thought I did not want to teach again, but when I was called upon to do a semester long subbing stint in a high school Emotionally Disturbed unit, all my original feelings for teaching came back. I love teaching and I love ki ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In my 6 years of teaching experience I’ve come to find out that there is no such thing as a “stupid question.” Each child or adult has a specific way of learning according to their own character. That’s the reason some are faster to learn mathematical concepts while others are faster in literary concepts. I believe in going slow and asking my students to explain what they’ve learned in their own words. If they can do this easily it means they have mastered the concepts. I usually encourage pre-reading before tutoring sessions. A student who has read the chapter ahead will absorb information more easily than one who has not read ahead.
I obtained a high honors degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry in 2005. Due to an outstanding GPA (3.74/4.00), I began to teach even as an undergraduate student. I was hired by the Athletics Department to help my fellow studen ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always loved helping students one-on-one and helping them understand what they are having trouble with in the subject of mathematics. I enjoy math and finding the correct answer for different problems. I like to show students the correct method for solving problems as well as how easy it can be to correctly complete a math problem. I believe that anyone can learn different parts of math if they have the correct resources and teaching style to help instruct them. Some students may need a visual approach while others may need a hands-on style and still others may need an auditory approach to learning. I tend to try to teach math to each student based on their different learning style.
As a high school mathematics education major, I had many opportunities to tutor other students in college level classes throughout my own post-secondary education. I have tutored college, high sc ... read more

The wonder of learning was insilled within me at a very young age by my parents within the warm home-schooled atmosphere they created. My formal school training began at the level of 8th grade, college at 15, BS Physics, and presently persuing MS Physics. A Graduate Teaching Asisstantship has afforded me the experience of working closely with undergraduate students, thereby making me realize I do enjoy helping others learn and get beyond the difficulties that will occur for all students from time to time. Additionally, I have been inducted into Kappa Mu Epsilon, Sigma Pi Sigma, and Psi Chi.
The manner in which I strive to help a student is first of all to just listen. Find out what is most important to them about the material. Next, speak calmly and confidently that any problems they are encountering can be resolved. Go step by step over what needs to be done, and review as muc ... read more

I have always felt that tutoring should offer a much more laid-back approach at getting concepts across to students. This is a chance to learn material in an environment that doesn't bear the pressures and stresses of the classroom and achieving a certain grade. Also as opposed to a classroom, I feel that the student should have the floor. This is their time to ask questions and talk through problems. When doing problems, I usually like to ask questions that gradually lead up to the answer and establish the concepts to get to the solution. Finally, I like tutoring experiences to be fun and am not afraid to lighten the mood with occasional jokes, as it seems that this atomosphere makes students more open and excited to learn the given material.
Throughout my undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois, I developed a passion for teaching and helping others achieve the ac ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a number of education courses completed from UD since I had started in the Elementary Education program there. As a Youth Minister I taught all age levels from sixth grade to seniors. I also taught training sessions for my adult volunteers. As a Sales Consultant part of my responsibilities was teaching program materials informational sessions to adults. While working at OIP&T as a Student Services Coordinator I taught two semesters of Communications and Psychology courses to the college students while an instructor took time off after her husband died.
I am an adaptable teacher. If I see that something is not getting through I will try a new angle to get the point across and am not afraid to try something to reach the students. No two people learn exactly the same way so one needs to adjust for the learner. Interactive learning is beneficial and usually helps keep stude ... read more

More About This Tutor...

The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I enjoy relating the ideas and facts to real world examples that almost anyone can grasp.
For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I believe that this has given me a great insight into what students really need, especially as schools continue to do a less than perfect job of preparing students for the future.
