I believe the key to learning is to break complex concepts down into manageable sizes. The goal of tutoring is to relate new or difficult material to simple ideas that are already familiar to the student. Above all else, it is important to communicate with the student to understand where the breakdown in understanding is and then develop an approach that aids in comprehension.
I earned three degrees in five years, all in quantitative disciplines. The range of material covered by those degrees includes mathematics and statistics, economics, and some computer programming. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people. I am also an advocate of learning by example; I will walk through a problem or two, step by step, until the process becomes obvious. From there, equations can become identifiable patterns that essentially require you to simply "fill in the blanks".

My style is based on the fundamentals; you cannot progress unless the basics are understood. Only after understanding the basics can an individual move to a higher level of understanding. I am there to facilitate the basics so that we can move together in understanding more advanced concepts. Those students I had at Bryant & Stratton years ago applauded me for introducing them to the basic understanding of accounting. It still baffles me that many professionals fail to understand what a source document is; several associtaes thing that when they prepare an Excel spreadsheet that this is "the source".
