I have been working with kids of all ages for a long time. I love to see them learn and grow. That moment when they "get" something is magical! I spent the 2011-2012 school year teaching at a title 1 school in Collier County and have grown exponentially from it! I had several students in my class who needed special help, and half of my class were English language learners. These students have helped me to strengthen my skills and adapt to different student's styles.
I like to make teaching fun! If a student is bored they aren't going to be putting 100% into their work. I also use a positive reward system and celebrate all achievement. Even if it is minor.

My comments on tutoring English ESOL : I have taught English to a 7 year old foreign (Haitian) adopted child who did not know English initially. She had acquired a good vocabulary and had no noticeable foreign accent after several years.

I have done private tutoring of high school students in math from pre-algebra to calculus and in other subjects. I have also home schooled adopted daughters from lower grades to high school level, including teaching English as a second language. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant in an electric machinery laboratory for non-electrical engineering majors. My own experience with standardized tests includes having taken the ACT in 1971 with scores ranging from 22 (76th percentile) in English to 31 (97th percentile) in math with a composite of 27 (93rd percentile) and having passed the GRE in 1975. Other previous experience includes 34 years experience as a communication system engineer. This experience includes satellite communications and other communications for the US military, NASA, FAA, and commercial customers. Antennas and radio propagation were special areas of profe ... read more

My name is Barbara M. I was born in Hamburg, Germany and raised in Japan. I have been tutoring for the past six years in Cape Coral, Florida. I grew up in Japan and came to the USA after I met my husband. Having a Japanese mother and German father meant I was surrounded by both languages, becoming fluent in both. I earned my IB in German in high school and took the O-level exam at Oxford University in London. I passed the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test at level N2 and am studying for the N1. Tutoring is my passion. Learning languages can be challenging, but I try to adjust my lesson plan according to my student’s need. Through my years of tutoring I had students telling me how they were so excited that they were able to use what they learned from me. I do set goals for students and try to lead them with positive encouragement. Each student has their own pace of learning Japanese o ... read more

Education is essential for the mind to grow.

On the whole, I look for a rather creative approach when it comes to learning and studying. I ask that students be skeptical in all they hear and read, so asking questions as a form of studying will be essential. Just reading a book or looking at flash cards for studying purposes can prove to be tedious and ineffective. And putting what's learned in context is always necessary if the subject calls for any everyday application.
I have helped people with their English-speaking skills off and on and am very skilled in spelling and grammar. I've been learning Japanese for going on three years, as well. I'm aware that it's not a particularly high in-demand language to learn, but I am more than willing to aid in learning it if it is desired. Also, having graduated high school, I have enough knowledge to teach kids about the basics of science, math, and English.

My comments on tutoring English ESOL : Native Speaker

I was an English Instructor in an elementary school in Germany. Up to 12 children (2nd Grade, ages 8-9 years). In addition, I taught English at a German Day Care facility where the children were between the ages of 2-5 years old. My responsibilities included teaching everyday vocabulary in a fun and exciting way. The company that I worked for was contracted by the US Army in Europe to provide American children with special courses to enhance their experience in Europe. I taught German to US military family members (ages 6-18). I was responsible for creating an efficient and enriching curriculum. I provided the students with working materials as well as books and games. I offered homework support and tutoring for children of German and American families (German and English language). The ages varied from 1st Grade to college students.I worked as a freelancer to provide customers with tra ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have many years of experience working in the eductional field, I began working as a teacher in 1977. I have worked in different schools at all levels, from elementary to adult education, so I'm very familiar with the teaching and educational process. I also hold a bachelor's degree in Education and I'm bilingual. I am fluent in Spanish, so I feel very confortable with my skills as a Spanish teacher.
I like to help people. I like to teach others and I'm not afraid of the challenges that go along with it. I also believe that children learn in different ways, so the method of presentation may be different too. I use different techniques to present a lesson to each student.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe i have the capacity to work and teach all children. I am very patient, open, and easy to talk to plus i always have a smile on my face. My goal is to make a difference in children lives and make them feel good about themselves; if i can have the opportunity to do so for at least two of them, i would feel like i accomplished my goal.
I believe i am a very much driven individual, i received my BA last December in Psychology. Due to my Psychology Degree i was able to take several behavioral classes which i believe enable me to understand children more. During the past year i have been working with children and adults with mental health and mental retardation disabilities, teaching them social skills and appropriate behavior. I really enjoy teaching other, it makes me feel like i am making a positive difference in someone's life.

More About This Tutor...

I am certified to teach both math and reading in Florida. I am particularly strong in helping students to understand the basics. I became a teacher because I feel that I can make a positive difference in my students' lives while providing them quality instruction from a teacher who truly cares. My last teaching assignments were in preparing high risk students to pass the FCAT and the GED. My students exhibited a ninety-seven percent pass rate on both tests upon passing my class.
Students should be taught as individuals based on their particular learning styles. People learn at their own rate. My philosophy is that all students can be successful if taught by a caring qualified teacher in a positive learning environment. I thoroughly enjoy the challenges of teaching. My reward comes when my students are successful in learning and develop positive self-esteems towards learning ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my studies I have learned that all students learn differently. When teaching in a classroom, I will have to discover the way each student learns individually. An important aspect of my teaching experience has been to get down on that students level, and look at the struggles each student has in the classroom. I modify lessons in order to have each student adapt them to his or her own learning style. I believe that each student is willing to learn, but needs to discover the best learning style suitable to their abilities.
As an English Education major, I have had numerous encounters in the classroom with each of my classroom practicums. After completing my degree in the fall of 2009, I will have over three semesters of classroom experience, working with students from the sixth grade to the twelfth grade. I have also worked as a childcare provider for several years, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I think it is fulfilling and rewarding to work with students and guide them through the learning process. My goal as a teacher is to be able to give students a good understanding of the subject being taught by providing them with the necessary tools, and examples of personal experiences and/or relating events that are familiar to them. Through these real life examples/hands-on activities, students have the opportunity to identify, associate, and apply their prior knowledge and make connections to the new concepts. I consider my persistence, dedication, strong organizational skills and dependability, qualities that will enable me to reach my goals and help students to reach theirs.
I consider education an essential factor in the development of each person. I have earned two degrees, a MA in Education, and a B.S. in Business Administration. I have helped students, both as an ESL and ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The definition of success varies from person to person, from situation to situation, from school to school, from goal to goal. A success story that I am proud to repeat to all who will listen occurred during the 2003-2004 school year. I had a group of 50 awnery, rambunctious, and extremely diverse eighth graders. These eighth graders were highly motivated. Unfortunately they were not motivated in the area of English, or responsibility, dependability, perseverance, or respect. Though these students had an abundance of creativity, knowledge, and ability, they lacked the focus and direction to use it TOWARD their education rather than AGAINST it. Through a lot of modeling, practice, encouragement, praise, and I'll admit, a lot of begging at times, these students began to become self-advocates for their own education. They began clearly seeing their education as an investment ... read more

I have been teaching since 2004, after graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. I started my first year in a 4th grade classroom. It was a wonderful learning and growing experience. Then I moved on to Middle School, 8th grade Intensive Math to be exact. I always taught the older students for their level in both the 4th grade and the 8th grade, and I found it challenging but great to find ways to keep them motivated on a daily basis. From there, I moved to my current position and I will be in this position for a long time. I work as the High School Intensive Reading Teacher. I love to teach reading to the students who do not know the basics and you move them up in grade level, in order to pass the FCAT! When they pass the FCAT it is so rewarding!
I love teaching children of all ages. I live especially to teach reading! I have been able to motivate my most unmotivat ... read more

Working with children is what I do best! I know that every child is capable of learning when given the appropriate learning environment. Every child is different and needs to be treated as an individual. In my classroom of 18 kindergarten students, I provide a wide range of activities that enrich, enhance, and provide on level and remediation work. My goal is to provide each child with quality education. As a tutor, I would strive to do the same. I would develop activities that met the individual students needs and create a love of learning.
Currently I am a kindergarten teacher at a local charter school. This will be my fourth year as a teacher, and I love it! I could not imagine doing anything else with my life. I have had one year of experience tutoring for FCAT prep for 3-5th graders. I earned a bachelor degree in Interdisiplinary Studies. I had the opportunity to le ... read more
