I have taught pre-k for 2 years prior to my experience in elementary education. I have a variety of experiences working with children in various settings including tutoring. For the past two years, I was a first grade teacher in a public school. This year I will be a first and second grade teacher in a private school.

Social Studies is one of my top subjects! This is my primary area of certification and the bulk of the classes that I took in college were geared toward teaching social studies. I hold a degree to teach social studies in grades 7-12.

My teaching style consists of a combination of direct instruction, active student participation, and frequent and differentiated assessment. I begin by presenting students with the information they will need to know for the unit that they are studying. I do this through the use of PowerPoint presentations, the SmartBoard, and video clips. I will often stop at several points throughout the lesson to see if students have any questions. I will also make sure that they are paying attention and will ask them questions about information they just learned, so I expect them to be paying attention and taking notes. My comments on tutoring Social Studies : My Master's Degree was in Film Theory and my final year thesis focused specifically on racism in a post-colonial context. I specialized in studying how Ireland's ethnic and semi-nomadic minority, the "Tinkers" or "Travelers" as they are not called, were represented in a variety of Irish films about land ownership. I have also worked extensively with social issues in the USA, mainly as the assistant director of a court-based volunteer advocacy program for children in foster care.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with children of varying ages since 1982. I am most passionate about Language Arts, History and Science. During my senior year in college, I tutored individual students in Science and I worked one-on-one with 4th graders helping them with Math skills. My classroom experiences include 3rd and 6th Grades. My 3rd Grade room in California had 32 students - 60% of whom were at kindergarten level English speaking / reading / writing. Many of their parents were non-English.
